Her mother told her it was the castle of King Boris. It could only be reached by climbing up through the forest and crossing the two cliffs by The Bridge of the One Hair. Molly's mum's granny had told her this when she was a little girl. She said that nobody went into the forest because it was a frightening place. She also told her that there was a giant who lived in the forest. "Imagine that!" she said laughing, `A giant! Who ever heard of such a thing?" |
That winter it was very, very cold. It was so cold that the sea froze so that it looked like a plate of glass and the trees were covered with a blanket of white snow. They couldn't catch any fish. There was nothing left to eat at all and they were all very, very hungry. Molly and Ella would dream about hot potatoes in their jackets and hot chocolate. They would pretend to eat cake... but still they felt hungry.
