Our latest show, which toured Scotland January-March 2007
Three Scottish children set out in search of the mythical Green Whale and have the adventure of their lives! The audience joins the crew of the Big Betty where the charismatic Captain Crill is a former pirate, Isabella the cook is a Spanish Queen who makes everyone eat oranges and Nin the Boatswain wants that whale and he wants it now! And then there’s the girl who they find in the sea!
This is a story of the sea. Of pirates and romance. Of deep-sea adventure. Of storms and sails and of ropes. A story to span the oceans... An engaging, compelling and magical adventure with music, to fire the imagination and make us laugh! A superb cast – Johnny Austin (Quangle Wangle) , Sarah Hawarth, Sean Hay and Itxaso Moreno, Directed by Virginia Radcliffe, Movement Direction – Kally Lloyd-Jones, Music by Tim Brinkhurst, Designed by Georgia McGuinness. After a Christmas run at The Traverse, Green Whale is on tour around Scotland from January 11th to March 17th. |
The sheer surreal energy of the story – along with the special atmosphere conjured up by Georgia McGuinness’ shipboard set, Moreno’s astonishing charisma as Balecho and the dedicated hard work of the rest of the cast, somehow weaves and conjures this awkward tale into a charming and seductive children’s show, full of magical moments and strange sights. Joyce MacMillan, The Scotsman.
Virginia Radcliffe and her Licketyspit company have sparked their sea-faring adventure with a tantalising sense of the supernatural, and ensured there are enough opportunities for us crew to join in saluting the cap'n and sighting the whale … Central to all this is Big Betty: robustly designed by Georgia McGuinness, she's a grand boat made for clambering over, with ropes, rigging, portholes and all. She even, with a flick of a sail, becomes the Green Whale itself. Tim Brinkhurst's atmospheric music includes shanties and jolly ditties to singalong effect – fun ahoy, with a mystical feel-good message nicely landed before the end. Mary Brennan, The Herald
Green Whale hits the spot just as Molly Whuppie, Magic Spaghetti et al did before it. Four actors switch characters with ease and clarity, ensuring nobody is lost along the way. The young audience is invited to”join” the ship’s crew and salute the captain, clap along with songs and keep an eye out for the eponymous mammal. While the Big Betty itself is a sight to behold, especially when it transforms into the whale. Kelly Apter, The List
Licketyspit’s renowned blend of story-telling skills and live music shine through in this tale. Top 20 for the Festive Season. The List.
