Maryhill Storyplay Games – The Exhibition launch!

A Celebration of Storyplay, family and community - with food, friends and play! On the 7th of July Licketyspit and Community Central Hall launched the Maryhill Storyplay Games Exhibition to celebrate our first Maryhill Storyplay Games 2026 (coinciding with Glasgow's Commonwealth Games!), created with photographer Eoin Carey and the Licketyspit Child-Photographers.   Eoin, who has worked with Licketyspit for many years photographing many of our projects, events and festivals, perfectly captured the joy, creativity and community of Storyplay! His genius invention addition, was The Licketyspit Photography Studio, where child photographers took wonderful portraits of their families and friends! The launch of the Exhibition at Maryhill’s Community Central Hall was a fabulous success, attended by Licketyspit families from across Glasgow, Licketyspit friends, supporters and members of the public who were experiencing Storyplay for the first time! Our fantastic Licketyspit Patrons, actor Sanjeev Kohli and Storyplay Champion, Zainab Adeleye, cut the ribbon to open the exhibition. They spoke eloquently about the power of Storyplay to create and nurture this richly diverse, generous and inclusive community and the importance of play, not only for children but for everyone, and how creativity and human connection helps us all become people who can change the world! MARYHILL STORYPLAY GAMES 2026!

A new collaboration between Licketyspit and Community Central Hall This Summer Licketyspit was delighted to host The Maryhill Storyplay Games in partnership with Community Central Hall, as part of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Festival of art, live music, sports workshops, and community city-wide events celebrating the Commonwealth Games! On the 27th of June over a hundred Licketyspit children and their families put on Racing Bibs for a programme of wonderful Porridge & Play games - from Funky Chicken to Monsters Footsteps! In Licketyspit EVERYONE'S A WINNER and ALL WE NEED TO PLAY IS EACH OTHER! After lots of fun play we awarded ourselves marvellous medals, before enjoying an international FEAST, dressing-up and taking sporty portraits in our On Stage Photography Studio. The day was also photographed by Eoin Carey to create a Maryhill Storyplay Games Exhibition at CCH to share this magical children and families' event with the people of Glasgow. Picnic & Play Summer’26 – family trips & outdoors Storyplay!

Our first trip to Troon Beach this Summer with Bridgeton Hub families! We had a lovely bus journey with our Porridge & Play Bridgeton families! On one bus we sang Old MacDonald, played Alphabet Countries (thanks to Suleman as it’s his fave game) and “My Names Bob & I’m Very Big & I like to eat Bananas!” And Virginia told the story of the Quangle Wangles Hat! (Which Licketyspit once did a show about – take a look here 👉🏽 https://www.licketyspit.com/families-2/licketyspit-projects/quangle-wangle/# On the other bus we chatted about the seaside and how excited everyone was about heading to beach! All the children were determined to go swimming even though the sun was not out today…but they weren’t worried about that at all! After spotting farms & sheep and cows and forests (or maybe woods.... And some people playing golf!) to our great glee (delight) we suddenly saw the SEA! It was windy & so sandy blowing in our eyes a bit but lots of us still hopped into swimsuits and leaped into the sea to paddle, to swim & to play - hooray! It was COLD but it was So FUN! Last Forest Storyplay of the Summer – playing and chilling with friends!

This morning it was cloudy and it even drizzled a wee bit but that does not stop Licketyspit families playing outdoors. We had Sruthi, Shanmukha and Daiwik, James and Yulia and Boatemaa and Gabbie but then we were joined by Penny and Cyrus and Abiodun, Faridah, Dorcas and Fawsan! How does it feel to Storyplay outdoors? Is it very different from Storyplay inside? Well, I’ll tell you one thing - only at outdoors Storyplay one can dress up and dance in the rain! We did it today - and it felt great! Our dressing up today was so elaborate and families created characters inspired by the wonderful Children’s Wood - James was Purple Tail -‘I live in the Forest , this forest the Children’s Wood, in the tree next to the beehive and that doesn’t bother me because bees are my good friends!’ Gabbie became Marshmallow - 'I live in Candyland and I like to eat lentil soup! I like to play with my friends and do everything else in Candyland!' Boatemaa was Mama Hippo - 'I live next door to Candyland in the Quiet Forest and I love singing’ Shamunkha was a Party Animal from Partyland and Sruthi and Daiwik were also Partyland citizens who party all day long! Forest Storyplay with Bridgeton Pals

Hanging out with pals in the sun, there’s nothing quite like it! While unfortunately a few of our friends weren’t well this week, those that were hopped on the minibus from Bridgeton and joined us for a super Storyplay session at the Children’s Wood. We warmed up, dressed up and suddenly we were joined by Scary Movie - ‘I can eat everybody!’ - a scary monster who moves fast and chases people! A Giant Dinosaur called Risen who lives in 100 countries and likes to eat trees A Scary Cat with sharp sharp claws A Big Dinosaur who eats people Mummy Cat (Scary Cat’s mummy!) Scary Kitten (Scary Cat’s sister, of course) A Happy Bug called Fillipe A Builder Dinosaur who wants to build a tower for the Bug Fillipe A Goblin who likes to eat ladybugs feet for breakfast And Peaches the Fairy who eats plenty of spinach We felt a bit worried about getting eaten. Especially the bugs and beasties who live in the Children’s Wood! So Scary Movie gave the Goblin a lollypop, which helped change his diet. And Peaches the Fairy gave everyone some spinach. Sunshine and outdoor play for all! Another brilliant session at The Children’s Wood… The sun was already shining, and we could all feel that it was going to be a proper hot Summer’s Day in Glasgow! Licketyspit families strolled into The Children’s Wood with big smiles and full of hugs from everyone. Today some families were meeting old friends and also making new ones, as some of the participants haven’t met each other before and Storyplay is a great way to connect with each other! We got active quickly with our Warm-up Rhyme ‘Big as a House’ and with a rather jumpy game of Funky Chicken! Dressing-up was fantastic and being outdoors certainly inspired everyone… Ruby became Diana the Dragon Fly who flies about looking for mushrooms Deon was John the Really Bad Dragon - ‘I do good things though! I get food for people; I live in a flat and I have a dog named Niko and a cat named Peanut.’ Ada turned into Victoria the Nun who likes wildlife and eats cornflakes for breakfast. Forest Storyplay is BACK and The Children’s Wood looks stunning! Cloudy in the morning, still gorgeous though. Full of life and beauty here at the Meadow. Trees bursting with green leaves. The lovely flowers are all out. You can see the busy bees Buzzing, flying all around! The Children’s Wood is kind to us We love it here and we have fun! Warming up with great wee rhymes, Trying dance steps all the time. Dressing up becomes more vibrant, When the Summer sun shines so bright. Funky Chicken? Ready to jump! Someone became a wee Sleepy cat, Two wobbly giraffes were in the Wood! We met a Happy Sea lion too! The Children’s Wood is kind to us We love it here and we have fun! A Magic Ball Adventure from Maryhill to the JUNGLE! ‘Everyone ready…BLOW!’ A tiny rainbow Magic Ball had carefully been placed on the floor and now we were all surrounding it and blowing it up bigger so we could all climb inside… ‘It’s getting BIGGER… And BIGGER… And BIGGER…’ We carefully opened the zip in front of us and we climbed inside ‘Don’t forget to close the zip behind you” We all gathered together inside the Magic Ball feeling excited and wondering where we could possibly go… ‘We could go to Land of Clouds’ - said Rita ‘Or to a Forest’ - said Zac ‘What about China’ - said Shirley ‘Or Hollywood’ - said Iris ‘Or the galaxy!’ - said Ada But the brilliant thing about the Magic Ball is that you don't know where you’ll end up until you land there! ‘Right everyone…let’s say the magic words!’ Magic Ball Magic Ball Takes us where we want to go… WHOOOSH! Welcome to the Big Porridge & Play Online 2025 blog where we share our stories and adventures! We make fantastic shapes and swing about our hips Jump and twist, hop and turn with our Online Peeps! So my friends! We were all ready for an Online Boogie to wake up all our senses before we got stuck into our imaginary Storyplay! – we love to warm up our bodies and our minds so we can sharpen our imaginations - like a pencil! Ready to create all sorts of adventures, characters and situations! We sang a song with people that tend to go to bed With Fried egg on their Faces or Jelly on their Head! At Porridge & Play we love singing and songs that tell good stories, are often the songs we like! Like Jelly on His Head which is a cool rhyming song about all these wonderful and eccentric people who have funny routines before going for a good night sleep! AND of course, we love The Funky Chicken, a brilliant shapeshift game Each player becomes an animal and asks us to be the same! Sam imagined a Three Legged Turtle and Ibrahim was a Funky Lion. FOREST STORYPLAY back for October Holiday Week!

We came from Whiteinch, we came from Maryhill. We all live in Glasgow; we love a picnic! And do you know what else we all love to do? We love to Storyplay at The Children’s Wood! At Forest Storyplay October Holiday Week Licketyspit families got together to enjoy playing outdoors and The Children’s Wood is an absolute favourite place for it! Whiteinch and Maryhill families enjoyed another fabulous day out playing, sharing food and learning about fire & cooking with Andrea! Funky Chicken was very inventive - we even learnt about a new animal with Yasna! Frankie showed us The Saxophone Playing Turtle and Maya told us about The Cheeky Dog. Yasna introduced us to The Titanboa and Ibraheem knew The Angry Fly! Aveen showed us The Dancing Crab and Andzelika told us about The Dancing Fish. And Shirley & Arvin together showed us The Silly Pinguin!. We flew high up in the sky with our Flying Balloons and from up there we saw water, a ship and pirates on the ship! Then Maha spotted the pyramids and realised we were over Egypt! We decided to fly down with our Flying Balloons to get some treasure from the pirate ship!
