Bookplay is a Porridge & Play session where we all listen to a Story and then instead of the Magic Ball we ALL JUMP into the world of a BOOK to have an adventure!

The Just-so-John Bookplay stories are by a writer called Rudyard Kipling who was born 160 years ago in India! Rudyard travelled all over the world, which was quite amazing because this was before there were aeroplanes so you could only travel by foot, by boat, by horse, by bicycle  or by train!!  

Rudyard’s stories for children were inspired by all the different places he saw – a bit like us with our Flying Balloons game! His Just-So stories are about animals in India and Africa! (His most famous children’s book is The Jungle Book – which you might have heard of! ) His Just So Stories are about how he imagined some of the animals in the world came to be the way they are – how the camel got his hump? , how the leopard got his spots?, how the whale got his throat? and other questions.

Virginia’s Dad John loved these Just So Stories when he was a child. When he grew up he read them to his children (including Virginia) and then he read them to his grandchildren! John lived until he was nearly 91! When he died  some of his friends and family decided it would be fun to help Licketyspit to do some Just-so- John Bookplay Sessions to introduce the stories John loved to more children!  We are calling these our Just-So-John Bookplays! We hope you enjoy them!

‘How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin’  by Rudyard Kipling – a Bookplay by our Castlemilk Hub families…

Our second Just-so-John Bookplay at Castlemilk Library was an absolute joy! Families got together exited to see which Just-So-Story we would jump into this time. So, we enjoyed a few of our Storyplay games to get us all going and then Ruby read us the story of…‘How the Rhinoceros got his Skin’.

ONCE upon a time, on an uninhabited island on the shores of the Red Sea, there lived a Parsee from whose hat the rays of the sun were reflected in more-than-oriental splendour. 

Dressing up the Licketyspit way is the perfect way for us to become all the characters, places and things in the story!

And one day he took flour and water and currants and plums and sugar and things and made himself one cake which was two feet across and three feet thick.

But just as he was going to eat it there came down to the beach one Rhinoceros with a horn on his nose, two piggy eyes, and few manners. In those days the Rhinoceros’s skin fitted him quite tight. There were no wrinkles in it anywhere.

We fabulously moved from being one character to becoming another as we recalled the story!

And the Rhinoceros upset the oil-stove with his nose, and the cake rolled on the sand, and he spiked that cake on the horn of his nose, and he ate it, and he went away, waving his tail.

‘Them that takes cakes

Which the Parsee-man bakes

Makes dreadful mistakes.’

Mr. Parsee carefully planned how to get his own back on the rhino for eating his fantastic cake!

During a Heat Wave while the rhino was cooling down in the water…

The Rhinoceros took off his skin and carried it over his shoulder as he came down to the beach to bathe. In those days it buttoned underneath with three buttons and looked like a waterproof

Mr. Parsee collected cake crumbs from his camp and sprinkled them all over the inside of the rhino’s skin and waited for the rhino to come out the water and put his skin back on…

And it tickled like cake crumbs in bed! Then he wanted to scratch, but that made it worse

The poor grumpy rhino tried everything to stop the itch! He even scratched and rubbed against a palm tree – that looked very much like one of our grown-ups and made us all laugh and laugh! But the itch wouldn’t go away which made the rhino grumpier and grumpier…

So he went home, very angry indeed and horribly scratchy; and from that day to this every rhinoceros has great folds in his skin and a very bad temper, all on account of the cake-crumbs inside

What a fantastic way to play with a good story…that’s why we call it BOOKPLAY!

‘How the Whale Got His Throat’ by Rudyard Kipling – a Bookplay by our Castlemilk Hub families…

In the sea, once upon a time O my Best Beloved, there was a Whale, and he ate fishes

We gathered at Castlemilk Library and we found out today was World Book Day – which was perfect for a Bookplay! We were oh so ready to jump into this tale about a whale, a person, and a wee tiny but wise fish. 

Before jumping into the book, we got warmed up and ready by playing some of our Storyplay games to get our imaginations going and then Virginia read us the story…

All the fishes he could find in all the sea he ate with his mouth—so! Till at last there was only one small fish left in all the sea, and he was a small ‘Stute Fish

We all dressed up as the characters in the story!

Some  of us decided to be the tiny ‘Stute Fish’!

Noble and generous Cetacean, have you ever tasted Man?’ ‘If you swim to latitude Fifty North, longitude Forty West (that is magic), you will find, sitting on a raft, in the middle of the sea, with nothing on but a pair of blue canvas breeches, a pair of suspenders (you must not forget the suspenders, Best Beloved), and a jack- knife, one ship-wrecked Mariner, who, it is only fair to tell you, is a man of infinite-resource-and-sagacity.’ 

(‘infinite’ means ‘never ending’ and ‘sagacity’ means ‘clever and canny!’).

Some of us became the Mariner person…with the suspenders (or ‘braces’ to hold up his trousers!)  

And of course, some of us became the very hungry Whale!

A brilliant thing about Bookplay is that you can be one character at one moment and a different character the next – we all collaborated and worked together so we could play out the whole story

 Noble and generous Cetacean, have you ever tasted Man?

A pair of ship-wrecked Mariners!

Even though the Whale had eaten all the fishes – except one! – he was still hungry so he ate the Mariners!

Inside the Whale’s belly the Mariners “stumped and they jumped and they thumped and they bumped…they pranced and they danced and they …hopped and they dropped and they ..danced hornpipes where they shouldn’t!”     amongst other things until the Whale got the hiccups!

‘Tell him to come out,’ said the ‘Stute Fish.

‘Nay, nay!’ said the Mariner. ‘Not so, but far otherwise. Take me to my natal-shore IN SCOTLAND! 

The Mariner, who was indeed a person of infinite-resource-and-sagacity, had taken his jack-knife and cut up the raft into a little square grating all running criss- cross, and he had tied it firm with his suspenders, dragged that grating good and tight into the Whale’s throat, and there it stuck 

By means of a grating, I have stopped your ating.

WHAT AN ADVENTURE!  Do you think you could Bookplay other good stories?

This week we played Let’s Bake a Cake with Bakers from all over the place.

• There was Baker Bella and Baker Beans.
• Baker Naughty Cookies and Baker Mushroom.
• 
Baker Silly Billy Shake Bake and Baker Pumpkin pie.
• And many other bakers besides!

What a cake these bakers made, with skeletons, worms and pancakes.

Strawberry donuts and chocolate too, bubblegum, pink rabbits and ducks and white paint.

Lava rocks gave the cake a crunch.

We cut a slice and had a munch!

What an imaginative cake indeed.

This week we also had time to read.

We read a book about a king who baked and cooked like anything!

Inside each book there’s a whole world to explore, you could go there in the Magic Ball!

Keep reading and Storyplaying while we’re gone.

But we’ll be back before too long!

Reflective Drawing

We almost always do ‘Reflective drawing’ at the end of a Storyplay session. It’s nice to relax and draw & think about what we’ve all done & how we feel about it.

Reflective drawing isn’t about doing a ‘good’ drawing – it’s about drawing whatever comes into your head when you think about what you’ve just done.

But as you draw you realise more about what you thought or imagined in the session. And it’s great to share that with everyone & hear what they thought! So many things go on in Storyplay!

We’re off, we’re off to play outside!

Behind a great big tree we’ll hide

From sharks that move beneath the waves

Under the trees we’ll laugh and play!

Out the library, past a bus, over the crossing, cars wait for us

Up the hill and into the woods

Where looking down from our balloons…

We saw a giant marshmallow!

A birthday cake – let’s have a slice!

Does it taste yucky or does it taste nice?

Nice like Granny’s cotton candy!

Some Grannies like to make lasagne.

Granny Soup is really kind and Granny Cloud she pays no mind

To those pesky trees that seem to move

A little closer through the woods.

But one Granny makes poison soup

So watch out Trees, don’t get too close!

Back to the library to snack and draw

We love the woods, let’s go there more!

Book Reviews

Each week the librarians get out some books for us to take home to inspire our Storyplay.

This week Anusha told us about Alice in Wonderland – Down The rabbit Hole

“It’s about the girl and the bunny. The girl saw the bunny running! She called the adult and the bunny got away.”

Anusha recommended this book and with help from Ruby, she read first the first two pages to us.

Charlie shared his book about dinosaurs –

“A long time ago there was dinosaurs! They died once the snow’s coming, they turned into skeletons. A dinosaur’s real, it actually moved and they end up in the museum and turn into skeltons. I saw a Teredactor it was up above me in the museum!”

Funky Chicken

This week we turned into wonderful witches and other magical creatures!

But not before playing Funky Chicken!

We met Charlie’s Slow Sloth and Sayeda’s Angry Cat.

Muhammed’s Happy Horse and Nicola’s Snappy Crocodile.

Bassie’s Wild Rat and Max’s Depressed Gorilla.

Ramisa’s Grumpy Cat and Anusha’s Angry Donkey!

Witches Fingers

Ha ha ha ha ha! I am a witch!

And I’m going to drink a bottle of…

Water! 

Pineapple!

Mud!

Cheese!

POISON!!

We had Abu Witch and Muhammed Witch, Anusha Witch and Claire Witch…Sarah Witch and many more witches besides!

Mucky Brew

These witches decided to make a Mucky Brew filled with all sorts of yummy and yucky things.

Flour and rotten eggs

Dinosaur’s blood and gloop

Mud and chocolate!

Magic Ball

Just then we found the Magic Ball….

Magic Ball, Magic Ball

Take us where we want to go!

A Woodland Adventure

The Magic Ball took us to the woods.

Where the bears live!

We fed the bears potatoes.

Not the poison potatoes!

Once they were full, the bears took us to the elves!

We met an elf who was making a cake.

We helped the elf bake the cake and got to try some.

Deeelicious!

Street Catch

We also played Street Catch.

This is a game we learnt from Leeanne at Porridge & Play Bridgeton when we made the All Scot Playcards.

Awesome Animals

This week was all about Awesome Animals.

We met Carina’s Jumpy Dog and Evie’s Crazy Chicken.

Charlie’s Eating Seal and Ruby’s Cheeky Kangaroo.

Maria’s Scared Elephant.

Kevin’s Cheeky Capybara.

Letter to my Love

These animals were very loving!

I sent a letter to my love and on the way I dropped it…

Someone must have picked it up and put it in my pocket! 

Was it you or was it you…?

Dressing up

When we dressed up we met a whole host of other animals!

Maria the Bat who eats Fruit flies

La la Ladybug who eats Cheese

Sammy the Snake who eats Evies!

A bunny called Betsy who eats carrots.

And a sloth who eats Gum Trees.

But there’s only one animal in Storyplay who has a watch…

What’s the Time Mr Wolf!

There was Diamond Wolf and Vine Wolf.

Two wolves who lived in spiderweb caves

A wolf who liked to drink cups of tea.

And a wolf with a stone watch.

Dinner time!

Well, luckily we escaped those hungry wolves. By this time, we were hungry ourselves!

We had boiled eggs and sweet chilli hummus. Strawberry jam and honeydew melon. Bananas, oranges and Sayeda’s delicious cake!

Castlemilk Blog!

How cool is Castlemilk Library!? Not only is it bursting with books, it’s also a place where you can Storyplay, chat, eat and make new friends.

It was great to see some familiar faces as we returned for the 4^th year of Porridge & Play Castlemilk.

Abu helped us at the sign in table as we welcomed new friends from St Bartholomew’s Primary and Arnwood Nursery

Quick as a flash, we picked up our balloons and soon we were flying high above Glasgow!

Gracey, Evie and Freya spotted a dinosaur – and oh no! It was eating their toes!

We also saw lions and tigers, eating steak. Feeling a bit peckish, we flew down to grab some.

Charlie spotted a llama and Danylo saw a hedgehog. They both made a lucky escape from that lion!

When we dressed up we turned into all sorts of people.

Just like in books, in Storyplay you can be anyone, go anywhere and do anything!

We met Mr Spider, Strawberry, Mrs Dinosaur, Mrs Potato, Mr Peach from the beach, Mr Fishy, Mr Llama and many more new friends!

Magic Ball, magic ball take us where we want to go!

We met a sleepy hedgehog and fed it delicious nuggets.

We swam in the sea with sharks and fish.

A dolphin led us home.

What an adventure! Can’t wait to see what we come up with next week.

Picnic & Play is here and Licketyspit is delighted to go on trips with friends from all our Porridge & Play Hubs across Glasgow. Picnic & Play is an opportunity to Storyplay away from our Glasgow neighbourhoods – visiting public spaces in our city – like museums, parks or galleries or visiting outdoor places outside Glasgow, like Troon Beach or Balloch Country Park and bringing Storyplay to all of them!

The sky above Troon Beach looked dramatic – a combination of greys with occasional rays of light braking through the clouds. The wind was blowing and there were seagulls screeching loudly while circling in the air through a drizzle of rain. Sound dramatic, right?

Well, no drama for our Maryhill Hub friends! – they were full of beans and so very excited about their day out that they almost didn’t feel how fresh it was – one certainly needed a couple of layers on!

Graeme and Andy, our drivers dropped us near the promenade so carrying all our bits and bobs for our picnic wasn’t a huge effort and everyone helped so it was even easier.

We settled and quickly many of our friends were already running around, digging in the sand or checking out the shore!

DANCING ON THE BEACH!

Our dance warm up got the attention of folk who were there also enjoying a day out and many passersby were smiling at us and admiring our moves! Ruby got us all started, and we threw some cool shapes.

Funky Chicken with Andre was hilarious, and seaside infused! We had a Pinching Crab and an Angry Sea-turtle as well as of course, a Naughty Seagull!

We had to make our voices loud for Hello My Name is Joe and after that, running away in Witches Fingers was particularly satisfying running in the sand!

Letter to my Love is a great game to play outdoors! You can make a massive, big circle and friends get turns very quickly – it is also a funny game with everyone trying to pull the least suspicious face they can possibly master!

We also had a couple of rounds of Monsters Footsteps with some really scary looking Monster Trees…

TIME FOR A PICNIC!

We put down some tarps and big cloths to sit down on the sand and have our tasty picnic which it was so delicious that of course it got the seagulls attention. However, we managed to eat peacefully, and we even had some ice cream before heading to the shore to explore, paddle and…SWIM!

Yeah, you read it right.

Some of our wee pals were determined and in they went for a full swim!

Moman made up a game about jumping waves and Shiva said she got a wee bit nervous when something in the water brushed one of her legs…it was just some seaweed! Dan also swam like a fish and Yasna, Amira and Gabbie loved collecting seashells on the seashore.

Shaylin and Gabriella couldn’t make up their minds. One minute they were jumping waves and the next running away from them! Maha decided after a while that she was going to get in the sea too, but Adam was not convinced, and he just decided to look at all the dogs playing around on the beach and feed muffins to the seagulls!

Did I mention that most of the grown-ups also went for a wee dip …..of their toes?

It was a fantastic and action-pack day at the beach so some of our pals had a wee nap on the bus on our way home but others, like Yasna and Amira, decided to make up games to play while travelling. Clever, eh?

The Picnic & Play season is officially open!!

Our Castlemilk Hub pals were excited to take flight at The Children’s Wood!

It was delightful to meet and Storyplay with our Castlemilk Pals who were very smiley in the Big Circle and ready to get warmed up and have a go at Funky Chicken.

We had a cracking game of Flying Balloons that started with Abu spotting people walking on grass before Taz saw some camels!

Then to our amazement Jessica spotted a big tyre swing with a pink dragon on it and Susannah saw a giraffe! There were dinos dancing and dragons making a chicken BBQ with salad – well spotted Fiire! And some penguins with a stall giving out flavoured candy floss

Then we met Forest Creatures like a Fighting Dragon, a Unicorn, a Jellyfish, a Ladybug, a Snake and a Flower moving in the wind – amongst others! We also of course met the Wolves who will tell you the time at your own risk!

Wolfie Abu lived in a dark scary cave. He had secret jewellery and stuff to sell and he found his watch while digging up a cave.

Fiire was Nice Wolfie, who lived in a sky tree house, ate bugs and liked to hang out with her friends. She found her watch – so someone must have lost it!

Wolfie Avery liked diamonds and had lived in her Bush House for 10 years. At 5 o’clock she digs for diamonds!

Then we had four Wolves together – Jese was Happy Wolf, Jessica was Excited Wolf, Poppy was Anxious Wolf and Desi was Rich Wolf! They lived in different places – a bush, a secret base, a treehouse and between them they had lots of diamonds, cakes, gold and jewellery.

Then, Andre found a Rainbow Magic Ball – as Abu pointed out!

Where could we go?…A Rainbow? Fairyland? Mirror Land, Lava land?

 ‘Magic Ball, Magic Ball, take us when we want to go!’

We landed in Mirror land where there were all sorts of different mirrors: long-turning mirrors, short-turning mirrors and funny looking-turning mirrors! Suddenly a grumpy person appeared shouting and complaining! It was The Dude of Mirror land.

-Who are you lot? – he asked rather angrily – I’m The Dude of Mirror land!

– I’m The Dude of Mirror land! – Desi shouted exactly in the same way as The Dude of Mirror land had done. Desi was obviously turning into a mirror! Because that is what happens in Mirror Land!

The grumpy Dude made us all go into the Mirror Hall where one person stands, and another becomes their mirror and whatever the person standing does, the mirror must do too! We all had a crack at it and let me tell you, being someone’s mirror is very funny but rather tiring!

It turned out that The Dude thought we were terrible at being mirrors so he made us follow him instead! We ‘mirrored’ every move he made and he showed us the way out of Mirror Land and into ……….Fairy Land.

-Hopefully you will do better here in Fairy Land! Grrrr – he grunted.

Fairy land is rather green and gorgeous! Very soon after we stepped into it, we met a Magic Butterfly Fairy! She was fabulous and kind and very interested in our names, which she thought were beautiful! A couple of other fairies joined her – one bigger one and another little one – who looked lots like our pal Desi!

– We are magic so what magic would you like to see?

– Could you turn us into fairies too? – we asked

– Oh, most certainly! But you’d need to help with the Raspberry Potion making…

– Oh! We can do that! – we replied

Out came the big Fairy Pot for Potion Making and we mixed many ingredients and then we chanted together: ‘Mucky Me! Mucky You! Mucky, mucky, mucky brew!’

-Now, you must spread this potion all over your face and body!

It was magic!! We all turned into Flying Fairies and after saying thank you and goodbye to the Magic Fairies we flew away for an adventure into the woods of Fairy Land!

Suddenly we arrived at a bit of the Woods that was quiet and a little spooky…We spotted a solitary house that looked a little scary!

-What shall we do?

-Let’s look through the window!

-Let’s fly away!

-Let’s Chap & Run!!

So, we did! Slowly, slowly we crept up the main door and…Chap & Run!!

We ran as fast as we could towards the Magic Ball and quickly, we said our magic words to get back to The Children’s Wood where a lovely Picnic was waiting for us. What an adventure!!
