Porridge & Play Danced With Adie!!

As part of our New Scots Integration project, Porridge & Play Hubs, we invited Ghanaian dancer Adie Baako
to take us on a family art voyage in Bridgeton, Castlemilk & Cranhill. Read all about them below!

Porridge & Play Hubs is running throughout 2022 with this block being the 2nd of our exciting New Scots Integration Project!

A Very Special Family Art Voyage for Porridge & Play Cranhill!

Thursday 19th May

‘That’s Adie teaching us to dance I was kind of dizzy thank you for teaching us to dance!’ – Bukumi

We got our dancing shoes on for our first Picnic & Play Cranhill!

What a welcome back it was – we had families old and new join us for a very special Session 1 of Block 2 and we all had a fantastic time.

Starting outside in the gardens of the Cranhill Development Trust we had a delicious picnic with fruit, bread, cheese, carrots, peppers, cucumbers AND we got to make our own smoothies & milkshakes out of all the ingredients we had. We had some very interesting combinations but they were all scrumptious!

Then we had the truly fantastic Adie teach us Kpanlogo, a classic Ghanian dance – it was so quick and so energetic and so so so much fun!

Everyone gave it a try from our littlest child right up to our biggest grown up and you all looked amazing. We even managed to get solos from each of the children and most of the adults. We loved seeing your personal favourite dance moves right along side the steps Adie was teaching us.

Funky Chicken Fact:

The KPANLOGO is a recreational dance of the Ga people which they created in the late ’50s/early ’60s in part to celebrate Ghana’s independence from the British. The movements are bold and radiate joy. The term “kpanlogo” can also refer to a type of drum – you can see us learning to drum Kpanlogo rhythms with Adie’s friend Thomas here).

While we were having our art gallery, Adie answered questions for us about dance, growing up in Ghana and anything else we wanted to know. We asked him when this sort of dance would be done. His answer? Anytime! Anywhere! Adie also told us how there was music everywhere when he was growing up. You would be on your way home from school and someone would start playing music so you would stop with your friends and dance and dance until you got so hungry you had to go home – if you didn’t get hungry you could be out for so long you might forget where you lived!

Porridge & Play Bridgeton Boogie with Adie too!!

Friday 20th May

‘This has just been great, they love it, and it was so fun and different!’ – Colleen

Our Porridge & Play Bridgeton families loved the season with the extremely talented Adie! The day was very relaxed, and everyone seemed really at home. It was really lovely to see beaming smiles as we danced all together with Adie! It was great to come together to talk about our experiences and share what we did growing up with Adie too. And we got so many amazing dance moves from everyone.

We met at Churchy and then opened up Jack’s Magic Map to go on an adventure! We saw a MASSIVE tree and sang Grandma Grandma on our way to Calton Heritage & Learning Centre. Suddenly we met a guard at the gate who challenged us before we entered for a glorious meal. Rayna made smoothies for everyone, handing them out while others had a go. After eating and drinking, we warmed up our bodies and became Big as A Bear! Then the Funky Chicken came to show Adie what we are all about.

Adie taught us some incredible dance moves that we loved to learn together. Dressed in traditional dance wear, he got us all to line up so we could watch and learn. It was so freeing to all come together and dance. Dance lets us express ourselves in a healthy way. If you’re ever feeling stressed, or sad or even happy, dance lets you move your body and can help you express the emotions you are feeling.

Once we were finished dancing, we all sat in a circle to talk to Adie and get to know more about him and Ghana. Adie let us know what it was like growing up in Ghana and he also commented on how friendly Scotland is.We love that lots of you feel so welcome in Scotland and so does Adie!

Isn’t it great when different cultures come together to show what’s important to them? It helps us see how big the world really is and how there are people just like us but also people different from us and that makes the world so much more fun!

Funky Chicken Fact:

Did you know there are over 50 languages in Ghana! The major ones are Akan, Ewe, Ga, Dagaare, and Dagbani. Out of these 50, only 11 are taught in schools today.

We were sad to see our Storyplay Champion Nicola leave us this week as she moves onto another job, but at Licketyspit we never really say goodbye, just see you later! Nicola will always be able to play our Storyplay games just like all of you! Everyone loved their Storyplay Champion and showed how important Nicola is to them by signing a card and giving her flowers and a big hug.

There have been lots of friendships forming and at Porridge & Play Bridgeton we love helping one another and showing how much we care about each other! We all really showed how bonded the group has become. Come back any time, Nicola!

Castlemilk learn all about Adie and his moves!!

Wednesday 15th June

What a fantastic Family Art Voyage we had Dancing with Adie at Castlemilk Community Centre!

Our Storyplay Champion Michelle was marvellous as she led a wonderful Big As A Bear for the first time, getting our bodies all warmed up to dance our hearts out! The Funky Chicken wanted in on the action too, bringing a whole host of animal friends to dance the night away.

We were all very excited to learn some Ghanaian dance moves with Adie and enjoyed learning the routine bit by bit. Fiire was right at the front and picked up the moves super quickly and with style. Abu really loved dancing and asked lots of great questions and Anita wanted to know when Adie was coming back again! One of the best bits was when Adie asked us to freestyle in the middle of the group which was fabulous, as it gave everyone a chance to perform their favourite move and have a centre stage boogie with their family and friends. What a crew of good dancers we have at Castlemilk! So lovely to see everyone dancing with joy!

The food was delightful with lots of healthy fruit and some special pizza slices today as requested. Our Special Smoothie Station was very popular and Leon wanted to try all the flavours! We had strawberry & banana and blueberry & banana and a mix of all the fruits including apple and orange, all mixed in with orange juice. Lewis loved his strawberry and banana one and Leon came back for more! Fiire enjoyed creating hers and then drew all the fruits at the end in her picture.

Funky Chicken Fact:

In Ghana a Porridge-style mashed purees of cassava and manioc (Cassava is a nutty-flavored, starchy root vegetable or tuber and Manioc is a type of Cassava grown on a shrub, which is a type of plant) is served with most meals. Fufu is considered the national dish of Ghana. Fish and seafood is widely used in dishes

The gallery was full of inspiring new artists, with lots of pictures of Adie on stage, the lights and all of us dancing. Abu wanted to know if this dance was in another language – what a great question, Abu! Well, the style of dancing comes from Ghana, in West Africa, but the amazing thing is, we were all able to dance a wonderful West African dance together in Castlemilk no matter which language any of us speak! What a wonderful afternoon!

Monster-Making & Illustration with Catherine

Did you know that you can make a monster out of just about anything?

A bottle cap can make a teeny tiny monster!

A wooden spoon can make a super cool medium size monster!

A cushion or a mop can make a brilliant really huge monster!!

For our final week we we were joined by the brilliant Catherine Lindow, an illustrator and librarian who led a workshop on all things MONSTERS!!!

Well… it looks like we have come to the end of this block of Story Play City & Family Art Voyage! And what an adventure it has been! A completely brilliant 9 WEEKS of playing, creativity, stories and fun!

We worked FAST and ROUGH in this workshop, leaping around to find our objects as soon as we heard the MONSTER FOOTSTEPS STOMP!!! So instead of dressing up ourselves, Catherine taught us how to dress up our objects, and turn them into wonderful monsters!!

Princess used a rubber and some tissue! Temi & Fuad stuck pencils into potatoes! Amir made a snake monster out of foam and tape! Iona made a tiny monster using a piece of pasta!

When all three monsters had been created, Catherine asked us to imagine what our monsters’ personalities were like..? And what would happen if our monsters met…?

Then we heard the story of Fiire’s monsters meeting for the very first time…

‘So here they meet at the restaurant called Monster Dinner Plate. So in the first place they are like ‘who are you and something?’ Because the little one came to meet his brothers and sisters so they all sat down together in a restaurant and they had blueberries with strawberry cake! But the strawberries are all mushed up with cherries on top! They ordered food and stuff like that then after that they went to a a forrest to go hunting and go and see if they can find anyone to play with. So yeah that’s what happened when they meet! THE END!’ – Fiire

A Monster story!

‘One day there was a monster but the monster was very small and he went to school but he got bullied, so he drank milk so that he can get tall! He drank the milk and even more milk and became the biggest and strongest monster in the school!’

Seeing all our monsters made from our imaginations from just about anything was amazing!

Thank you Catherine, we now know we can make a monster friend anytime with just our imaginations!!

Hamish & The Hoolit

We flew with the Hawk over the whole world!

We met the peacock, the robin and the golden bird!

We told wee Hoolet just to be himself!

And we hoot hoot hooted like owls ourselves!

This week we were welcomed into Hamish’s Hoose for a nice wee time!

And what an AMAZING time we had! We learnt the ancient story of the Hoolet, which is the Scots word for an OWL.

In the story the wee owl grows into a beautiful bird, and learns that being beautiful is just about being who you are!

You all had fantastic ideas throughout the story of the Hoolet!!

Coffee Painting with Jaz!

What you need for coffee painting:

Paper

1 teaspoon of instant coffee

Two cups for mixing the paint

Cold water

1 paintbrush or cotton earbud for painting

1 candle

Have you ever realised that it’s possible to make paint out of coffee?!

Paint that is light and dark and runny and thick and really fun to make! Well, this week we learnt how to do just that! We were joined by the wonderful artist, Jaz, for our fourth week of Family Art Voyage.

Jaz has been painting with coffee for a long time, and has discovered how easy it is to make a brilliant picture!

Our Stories

‘So there was a snake in the beach and a dragon fly flying around and a tornado and there was snow and snow coming down on the beach!’

‘There’s a dog on the street and a tree and its walking under the tree going to the park!’

‘The cat went back to the beach and they met his friend and were sunbathing on the beach and they spotted a cloud that looked like an Australian dog!’

How to make the paint

Put half of your coffee in each cup. Add a tiny splash of water to one cup and a bigger splash of water to the other cup. This is to make your SHADES of paint – one lighter colour and one darker colour! Mix them with your paintbrush or a teaspoon to make sure the coffee granules have dissolved. Then test out your colours to make sure you are happy with them, remember you can always add more coffee or water to make the paint lighter or darker. Then you are ready to paint!!

Candle trick

As a bonus magic painting trick, Try drawing on the page with the wax of your candle. What you draw will be invisible until you paint over the top of it! Magic!!

In our sessions we made up a storybook, each adding a page to the story with our paintings! Each page had a character, a setting, and something to make them happy!

Some characters we thought of: a shark with legs and a unicorn tail! A surfing dingo! A cow!
Some places we thought of: the jungle, under the sea, in a sweetie shop!
Some happy things that could happen: playing with family and friends! Feeling love in the air! Seeing a pumpkin!

Coffee Painting is so much fun!

Once we’d come up with our ideas, we started painting!

Mini Worlds With Ali

19th, 20th and 21st October

We had a fantastic third week of Family Art Voyage with our guest artist Ali Maclaurin who taught us how to make our own mini worlds using whatever we could find around our house… or in our garden!

Ali read us a poem called ‘The Island’ by A. A. Milne which made us think about what our own mini world might be like..

What colours would we see? What could we smell? What could we hear? What did the ground feel like? What animals could would live there?

With all of these brilliant ideas and images in our heads, we set to work to MAKE our mini worlds! And what brilliant worlds they were!

With Ali to fire our imaginations we got to creating our own Mini worlds!

Using cardboard, glue, paint and colour we managed to create and explore our very own Mini Worlds. Ali helped us to unlock all the potential our Mini worlds had to offer and what worlds they are!

We used…

Upside down yoghurt pots make wonderful hills!
Pencils stuck in lumps of blue-tack make brilliant trees!
Ripped up strips of paper make a beautiful backdrop!

‘My world is gonna be green and blue. I could hear the waves and the sand. I could smell salt and wood and I could see birds and a cat and a whale.’

’In my world the colours I saw were the blue waves and the golden yellow sand. I could hear waves going through the wind and I could smell my picnic food that me and my family were having. I felt sand on the floor and the cold water. And I could see a palm tree and the sunset.’

‘I did a sunset with a family at the beach and there’s a palm tree and two kids playing in the water and that’s the picnic.’

‘I writed colours, tree, coconut, dark white sand, blue and sandy.’

‘I saw red and blue sand and I could hear strange birds singing that didn’t sound normal. And I could smell sand and coconuts and it was really bumpy.’

‘This is me in the water I was curly and living in a land. So this is Curly Koala and this is the water in this land. This is the sun and these are the trees, and a picnic with stones round it. I used stones because I’ve been getting them from outside!’

Musical Theatre with Caitlin

6th, 7th, 9th October

We had a fantastic second week of Family Art Voyage with our guest artist Caitlin Forbes who joined us on zoom from Caithness, in the north of Scotland. We learned all about Musical Theatre in her workshop all about chefs!

First of all we had to come up with our chef CHARACTER!

What did our chef look like? What kind of food did we cook? What was our personality like?

We met many chefs like ‘Chef Bunny Bun who was lovely and made cakes!’

Then we were ready to play a game of ‘YES CHEF!’ In this game we took turns being the ‘head chef’ who gave instructions to everyone else in their kitchen!

‘Sweep the floor!’

After ‘YES CHEF,’ we used chefs instructions and tasks to come up with a dance routine! Caitlin taught us that anyone can make up a dance just by thinking of actions.

For example: if the action is ‘rolling the dough’ you can make it a dance move by using your whole body to roll the dough from side to side, swishing your arms as you go!

We did each dance move for 8 counts, along to the song ‘Food, Glorious Food’ from the musical ‘Oliver!’ Each group made up a FANTASTIC dance routine, all from chef actions!

We danced and danced and danced.

On Saturday more chefs came from far and wide to share their chef skills! Chef Caitlin was the masterful chef of cheese toasties! Chef Adesayo wore her best chef clothes with ‘a tray with food for my customer, and even more to make!’ Chef Azaan made fine lasagna! Chef Eshal made delicious bread!

Chef Priscilla instructed us to ‘peel the potatoes and make me a pepperoni pizza!’ Chef Islaam told us to ‘wash the dishes!’

I wonder if you can remember all the moves! Or maybe you’ve made up a new dance routine at home?

The session inspired some brilliant reflective drawings and stories.

Fiire described a meal from her Chef’s restaurant!

‘So over here there’s one of my customers’ meals. There’s taco, onion there’ s some guacamole, there’s some cheese and some bell peppers and some other ingredients. And then there’s some peas and things like that. Then there’s orange juice and then I made some yummy baking stuff while I was dressing up AND I went to the grocery shop to go and buy a gingerbread man!!’ My favourite part was the dancing, when we were picking up all the things to give them to the customers!’

Nuo Xuan described her drawing too: ‘So when we were doing the dancing I saw a door down the stairs and I went in it! It taked me to the shops and to the bakery to buy some bread!’

Muizza like that everyone got to say there own movement.

Dancing & Drumming with Adie & Thomas

‘LET’S ALL PLAY THE DRUM, LET’S PLAY THE DRUM!’

We had such a FANTASTIC time at last week’s sessions with Thomas and Adie. They joined us on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for the most brilliant and exciting workshops where we learnt a Kpanlogo drumming rhythm, some Ghanaian dancing and the ‘Sugar & Butter’ song!

Thomas and Adie had great big Djembe drums from Ghana, but they told us that to learn drumming all you need is a mixing bowl or cooking pot from your kitchen! Everyone made brilliant drums from bowls, Tupperware boxes, and even great big yoghurt pots! Thomas showed us how to hold our bowls between our knees and which parts of our hands to use to make different sounds. Then we learnt a Kpanlogo’ rhythm which went along with these words: ‘LET’S ALL PLAY THE DRUM, LET’S PLAY THE DRUM!’

We them learnt a whole dance routine with Adie. Picking apples from the tree! The Roll and Show! Slicing the cheese! Saying the Prayer move! And of course… the Wiggle dance! We put all of these moves together and danced along to Thomas playing the drum. What brilliant dancers we have at Porridge and Play.

We all sat down to learn the ‘Sugar & Butter’ song with Adie. It’s a call and response song where one person sings about what they love and everyone else responds with ‘Sugar and Butter!’ We all had a go:

There was so much love in the air!

We finished with some brilliant reflective drawings and great questions for Adie and Thomas.

Shullamite asked ‘how many Drum rhythms do you know?’

Osak asked ‘Is Ghana a nice country?’

Fiire asked ‘Can you play any other instruments?’ And then told us a joke that she had made up, inspired by the Sugar and Butter song! Then she told a joke:

‘This is the joke of the day: like butter or the butterflies who give you butter in your face and laugh until your lungs are tired out!’

We all had such a brilliant time with Thomas and Adie, and hope that they come back soon for more singing, drumming and dancing!

Exciting opportunity for Artists to deliver workshops for Licketyspit Children & Families Network

Licketyspit children’s theatre & play organisation seeks 6 artists to deliver 3 online workshops for 3-12 year olds and their parents/carers.

Developed in close consultation with our Children & Families Network (CFN), Family Art Voyage seeks to take families on a shared voyage of creative discovery, in the familiar, supportive setting of their Licketyspit Porridge & Play group.

We are looking for artists from a wide range of disciplines who have exuberance, strong social skills, a commitment to children’s human rights and a passion for social justice and equal access to the arts. CFN Children have expressed a particular enthusiasm for rap, chalk art, collage, dance and music but we are open to all artforms & workshop proposals that can be delivered effectively to this intergenerational age-group via Zoom.

Successful applicants will receive a 2-hour training session in Licketyspit’s Children’s Rights-based ‘Storyplay’ approach to child and family engagement and Licketyspit’s Children’s Rights Guide for Artists. Session delivery must be rights-based and you will be supported by 2 of Licketyspit’s experienced Actor-Pedagogues.
