Hamish & The Hoolit

Family Art Voyage 5

Welcome to the Porridge & Play Online blog, where we share the stories of all the adventures
we’ve had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! Get in touch to find out how to join.

We flew with the Hawk over the whole world!

We met the peacock, the robin and the golden bird!

We told wee Hoolet just to be himself!

And we hoot hoot hooted like owls ourselves!

This week we were welcomed into Hamish’s Hoose for a nice wee time!

And what an AMAZING time we had! We learnt the ancient story of the Hoolet, which is the Scots word for an OWL.

In the story the wee owl grows into a beautiful bird, and learns that being beautiful is just about being who you are!

You all had fantastic ideas throughout the story of the Hoolet!!

YOUR IDEAS FOR THE STORY

Our Adventures with the Hoolit

‘I think he should maybe be happy about himself the way he was born because everyone’s born different and not ugly.’

Emmanuel

‘The hawk might see trees but they might look like bushes because you can’t see the tree trunks.’

Fiire

‘They could tell Hoolit he was being a bit mean and say sorry or something?’

Janaiba

‘They could pluck their feathers back from Hoolit!’

Pemi

‘They could say, you’re beautiful no matter what and we’ll be your friend!.’

Janaiba

‘They could take him to the blue sea to bath!’

Genesis

‘They could give him one of their feathers!’

Adesire

‘They could just tell him what makes you different is what makes you beautiful!!’

Faridah

‘I think it might see the water and the grass!’

Ameen

‘It might see an eagle!’

Faridah

‘It could see clouds and a rainbow!’

Felicia
What do you think the Hoolit should do about not being beautiful?

‘I think he should maybe be happy about himself the way he was born because everyone’s born different and not ugly.’ – Emmanuel

When Hoolit was being vain and unlikeable what should all the other birds do?

‘They could tell Hoolit he was being a bit mean and say sorry or something?’ – Janaiba ‘They could pluck their feathers back from Hoolit!’ – Pemi

How could the other birds make Hoolit more beautiful?

‘They could say, you’re beautiful no matter what and we’ll be your friend!’- Janaiba
‘They could take him to the blue sea to bath!’ – Genesis

‘They could give him one of their feathers!’ – Adesire
‘They could just tell him what makes you different is what makes you beautiful!!’ – Faridah

What do you think the hawk would see, hovering over the world?

‘I think it might see the water and the grass!’ – Ameen
‘It might see an eagle!’ – Faridah
‘It could see clouds and a rainbow!’ – Felicia
‘The hawk might see trees but they might look like bushes because you can’t see the tree trunks.’ – Fiire

Our Hoolit inspired drawings!

‘I wrote a disco ball up there saying Hoolit, hoolit do the hoolit rap and I also did a DJ’s box!’

Amir

‘This is the peacock, this is the Owl, I just put a rainbow and this is the tree! And I wrote, whatever makes me different is what makes me beautiful.’

Murshidat

‘So this is an owl so it was when all the birds came down and they gave him one of their feathers and then they all gave him a feather and he was being so mean because they all gave him his feather! I loved the rap bit!’

Fire

It felt like we were swooping across the sky with Hoolet, passing the stars and feeling the breeze of the night through our feathers!

Thank you Hamish, we hope to come back to Hamish’s Hoose soon!!

(The Hoolit Family Art Voyage was delivered by guest artist Hamish Macdonald, with Actor-Pedagogues Iona and Andre)

Then we all burst into the HOOLET RAP! Here are the words for you to rap at home!

THE HOOLET RAP

I AM A HOOLET AND I AM A WEE OWL!

I WENT TO THE FOREST AND I STARTED TO HOWL! I LOOKED IN THE RIVER AND WHAT DID I SEE?

A FUNNY WEE HOOLET LOOKIN BACK AT ME!

I WENT TO THE PEACOCK AND I ASKED FOR ADVICE

I SAID MISTER PEACOCK I DON’T LOOK VERY NICE!

ALL THE BIRDS CAME FROM THE SKY AND THE TREES

AND EVERY BIRD THERE STUCK A FEATHER ON ME!

I SAID I AM THE NICEST NOW CAN’T YOU SEE?

SO ALL THE BIRDS TOOK THEIR FEATHERS BACK FROM ME

I LEARNED MY LESSON I HAD TOO MUCH PRIDE

IT’S NOT JUST HOW YOU LOOK IT’S WHO YOU ARE INSIDE!

HOOLET! HOOLET! DO THE HOOLET RAP! WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO- WHOO-WHOO- WHOOO!

HOOLET! HOOLET! DO THE HOOLET RAP! WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOOO!

HOOLET! HOOLET! DO THE HOOLET RAP! WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOO-WHOOO!
