How YOU can help shape a revolution in children’s rights!

Why are we so excited?

Last week, something happened which made us very happy here at Licketyspit! In a big document outlining their plans for the next year the Scottish Government promised to deliver “a revolution in children’s rights” – how exciting does that sound?! They plan to do this by incorporating a major international law protecting the rights of children into Scottish law.

It’s called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is a bit of a mouthful, but that’s because it’s the most complete statement of children’s rights ever to be written. This means that it covers all parts of a child’s life. No-one, or nothing, is left out: the needs of each child is as important as the next.

So, as well as extremely important things such as a right to education, healthcare and protection from violence, neglect and exploitation, did you know that children also have…

The right to be LISTENED TO
Article 12 – respect for the views of the child

The right to EXPRESS THEIR THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS
Article 13 – freedom of expression

The right to PLAY WITH THEIR FRIENDS
Article 15 – freedom of association

The right to RELAX and PLAY!
Article 31 – leisure, play and culture

What does this actually mean for your children?

If the UNCRC becomes part of our law here in Scotland, it means that – on the most extreme side of it – we can use the legal system to defend young people if anyone takes away any of these rights. But, it will also have an impact on your children’s day to day life, because it means that ADULTS will be legally responsible for making sure that children get to enjoy all of these things!

The Convention actually explains what adults need to do to help, which could mean some differences in how a whole range of things in your child/ren’s life are approached, such as how schools decide what to teach them, what opportunities they have to play and socialise, and how they are spoken to by doctors, teachers and other adults.

Also, all of the rights are of equal importance. So, if the Scottish Parliament approves this Bill, being able to play, see their friends, form their own beliefs and have their voices heard will be (legally) just as important as anything else in children’s lives – which we wholeheartedly agree with!

Here’s where you come in!

For the government to make this happen, they need to speak to young people. It’s ADULTS who put these laws in place, but it has to be CHILDREN who tell us what they want, need and think – or it doesn’t make any sense!

One way of doing this would be to have a conversation with children. But if we really want to speak to children in their language, how about we PLAY together instead…?! Play is children’s language, and the better we learn to speak it, the better we’ll be able to represent children as their champions; it’s a brilliant way to find out what children think, feel, want and need.

That’s why on Mon 21st and Mon 28th September, we’ve invited policy makers from the Scottish Government to one of our play sessions. We’ll play our usual games and have our usual fun, and through play, we’ll encourage the children to talk to us about what they think and feel about how things are going at school, at home, in their lives, and anything they’d like to change.

By taking part in our session, YOU can help your children’s voices be heard and respected. Together, as children’s champions, WE can help to make vital changes to create a brighter and happier future for children across Scotland.

If you want to have your say in the meantime, the Children’s Parliament have created this How Are You Doing? survey for 8-14 year olds to find out how children are doing and collect their thoughts on how they’re feeling, in their own words. Children’s experience matters!

Oakwood P4 Storyplay Session 5

Session 5

Wednesday 11th March 2020

We had a fantastically exciting day with the Primary 4 class at Oakwood Primary on Wednesday. After a couple of games (warm up, funky chicken) to warm up our minds and bodies – led by the children – we revisited the stories we had all created in the previous session.

We read the stories aloud first, to remind ourselves of them, passing round the story in the circle so that everyone could read a bit if they wanted to. And what hilarious and interesting stories they are!

Then, as a whole class, we leapt into the magic ball and went into the story of ‘Miss Piggy and the Magic Book of Spells!’

This whole story takes place under water so we took a long time practicing our underwater creatures; moving like octopus, seaweed, dolphins and fish, and making the sounds of whales and seahorses. Iona narrated the story and the whole class acted it out as it went along. We used the big blue silk to swim around on top of and dive underneath!

When it came to the point in the story when the evil red octopus is about to cast a nasty spell on Miss Piggy we realised that we could incorporate Monsters Footsteps into the story. So instead of granny we had a red octopus and instead of the trees/monsters, we had sea creatures, and the sea creatures swam up behind the red octopus when it wasn’t looking!

After break, we split into our three separate story groups and went into different rooms, one group with Iona and Mrs. Fullerton, one group with Ruby and one group with Mrs. Sheridan.

Each group then did what we had done before break with the first story: reading it out and acting it out alongside. Each group came up with fantastic ideas for storytelling and demonstrated brilliant acting skills! We then split up the story into sections so that everyone in each group has a piece of the story to narrate.

What a rich and exciting day we had! We can’t wait for our next day with the Primary 4’s, we will be practicing acting out the stories again and narrating our sections alongside it.

We also picked up some post – replies to the letters from the Giants’ Mums and the Kings’ Cousins! You can read a brilliant example below:

Dear Giant Mum

I hope you are well. Thank you for the letter. It made me feel brave. I loved the letter.

The hens have stopped pecking at my toes. It would be lovely if you could come over for some baking. The king is a horrible man. Even horribler than the hens. Maybe when you come over to bake we can make some vegetable pizza. Tell me when the mountains get hotter and I will come up.

I can’t wait to see you next week. I will get everything sorted today. I love you. See you next week. Bye mum. Love you!

Oakwood P4 Storyplay Session 4

Session 4

24th February 2020

We had another wonderful day on Monday with Primary 4!

We started with the warm-up to get our minds and bodies working and created lots of our own rhymes and similes with actions. The whole class then had ten minutes to go and write down pairs of rhyming similes. Here are some fantastic examples:

As boingy as a kangaroo that went wohoo! – Derek
As bouncy as a trampoline and as sad as a scene – William
As yummy as a cake and as cold as a snowflake – Mason D
As tall as a tower and as big as a flower – Amber
As warm as tea and as giggly as me! – Kasey

Jump as high as a bunny and as round as money – Alina
As slimey as a snake and as big as a cake! – Kaydie
As big as a giant and as long as the titanic, as wiggly as a worm and as squiggly as a squiggle – Kasey
As cozy as a nook and as crook as a book – Tommy
As loud as a dog and as white as fog – Jodi

We followed this with Funky Chicken which was started off by Mason D. We had lots of fantastic animal suggestions from everyone. Such as the ‘dying fish,’ ‘wriggly jellyfish’ and ‘snapping crocodile.’

We then did Ickerickeroo which is a song all about body parts, but instead of normal names they have Scottish names like ‘lug listeners’ for ears and ‘chest wheezer’ for chest and ‘bread basket’ for tummy. This was sung heartily by the whole class who all know it very well by now!

We then played ‘Kings Footsteps’ which was a Molly Whuppie inspired version of ‘Monster’s Footsteps.’ In this version the grandma that lives in the forest is a giant instead who lives in his house with a beautiful garden. Instead of the ‘creepy trees’ we had ‘creepy kings’ who were sneaking up on the giant to steal his precious things by walking across the bridge of the one hair. This version was brilliant! The kings were fantastic at wobbly walking across the bridge and then staying completely still when the giant turned round to have a look. Today Brooke, Melissa and Mason D were the giants.

After break time we moved on to story making. We used 3 cups to make ‘3 cup stories.’ As a class we came up with objects for one cup, characters for the second cup and places for the third cup. We then split into three groups and each group picked out a place, character and object from each cup and used these as inspiration for their story. We ended up with three fantastically rich stories which you can read below:

So a very rich day at Oakwood was had. The cups have been left there so that more stories can be written. And there’s some rumours that the letters the p4’s wrote last week have some replies on the way!

Oakwood P4 Storyplay Session 3

19th February 2020

We had another great day with Oakwood’s P4s!

We started with Storyplay games and our ‘Big as a Bear’ warm-up grew into a new group poem of similes and actions like ‘Make yourself as… ‘Smiley as a person!’ ‘as Spikey as a hedgehog!’, ‘as Rolly as a ball!’, and ‘as Slow as a Sloth!’

We flew off in our Magic Balloons again high over Scotland and the world …seeing stories unfolding far below us!

Then we sat and told each other the story of the Molly Whuppie LicketyTale we saw on Monday. Everyone had fantastic recall of the story in great detail.

Ten of us dressed up as the King! And twenty of us dressed up as the Giant! We had great fun exploring our castles and our gardens! The Kings paraded to join the Giants and we met all the characters.

The Giants interviewed the Kings & then sang gardening songs and did a bit of gardening.

As Hungry as a Wolf – Ava
As Loud as Music – Lily

As Soft as a White Tiger – Kaydie

Then the Giants wrote a letter to their Giant Mums to tell them their news and what a problem they are having with the King asking for the 3 precious things…

And the Kings wrote a letter to their King Cousin, to tell them how things are going at the castle and how much trouble they are having getting the Giant to give them the 3 precious things.

The King wants the Never-empty-purse because he is so greedy! He wants the Dragon Sword so that people will be afraid of him and do as he says. He wants the Singing Ring so he can sing so beautifully that everyone will love him!

The poor Giant is scared that the King will tell the people that he is a nasty horrid Giant and they will come to chase him from the mountain. He is practicing being a scary Giant! Not very well!

Oakwood P4 Storyplay Sessions 1 & 2

This Spring at Oakwood we are working with Primary 4 on a Storyplay literacy residency. All of the children’s written & artwork can be looked at on our Facebook page – a selection of pics are below.

Session 1

In our first session on Monday, we played a selection of Lickety Playcard games and did reflective drawing and writing.

Everyone came up with a Funky Chicken animal, and wrote down this as well as what they had seen from their Flying Balloons. We had a very wholehearted game of Monsters Footsteps with Summer & Darryn as enthusiastic Granny’s!

In the Magic Ball… we landed on a cold Star. We saw a mountain – someone thought it might be Everest! We handed out boots & hiking sticks, being quiet in case we surprised anything!

We all hiked bravely up the mountain, jumping over a crevice, someone saw a polar bear, someone else saw a giant diamond! We encountered two aliens – everyone shook hands with the first and fed biscuits to the second. Someone else gave it Goo.

We found the alien’s broken spaceship and everyone got involved in mending it – finding wood, screw-drivers etc. Then we jumped into a crater & fell down into the sea, where we saw lots of sea creatures.

Finally, we all had a sleep by the sea looking up at dark sky.

This story was illustrated and written about by every child before presenting their work in the Lickety Art Gallery.

Session 2

After lunch, Virginia presented the LicketyTale of Molly Whuppie! A fantastic story of bravery and adventure, about Molly, the Giant and the King!

Everyone wrote abut their favourite part or character and illustrated their work beautifully.

Each child received their own copy of the Molly Whuppie book. We will continue exploring this story later this week and all work will be presented at the Exhibition and Assembly at the end of term.
