We are thrilled to announce that Licketyspit has been funded by the New Scots Integration Fund to set up two new Porridge & Play Hubs in Glasgow! 

Porridge & Play Hubs – Castlemilk & East End will be delivered in partnership with Storyplay Champion partners, parents/carers and children from these communities, with open sessions starting in the new year.

The project has been designed in consultation with the Licketyspit Children & Families Network and draws on Licketyspit’s highly successful and well-evaluated intergenerational imaginary play project Big Porridge & Play Glasgow.

We chose Castlemilk and the East End for this expansion because of the high numbers of asylum-seeking families living in and around these areas who have joined Licketyspit’s Porridge & Play Online sessions and further, because of the enthusiasm of our local partners to learn about and use Licketyspit’s Storyplay approach.

Licketyspit hopes these two new Porridge & Play Hubs will develop into popular and long-lasting cultural assets to support integration, children’s rights and family relationships in the East End and Castlemilk!

We are therefore involving partners and local Storyplay Champion parents, carers and children who already play with Licketyspit, from the very start of the project.

Please note that the in-person sessions in the East End will take place in Cranhill and Bridgeton. Some will take place in local parks too. The project runs until September 2022 (reporting in October 2022).

How to get involved

Be a Storyplay Champion – families

We’re looking for parents, carers and children who’ve come to Porridge & Play before and live in these communities and would like to:

1 – take part in Storyplay Champion training
2 – help us make a film
3 – then help us run the sessions in the new Hubs.
Travel expenses will be provided if needed for in-person sessions.

Storyplay Champion training will be for 4 weeks around October/November and then the Hubs will launch next February.

Be a Storyplay Champion – professionals

Licketyspit invites all local children & families professionals, teachers, CLD, ELC, youth workers and other professionals to an online introductory presentation on Tuesday 5th October 6.30-8pm to find out more about the Hubs project and how you could get involved as a Storyplay Champion.

Storyplay Champion professionals will co-host the sessions alongside the Licketyspit Actor-Pedagogues and Storyplay Champion families. This means they will take part in free training in the Storyplay approach (8 weeks) led by our Artistic Director, and help shape the project.

In the introductory session we will share examples of Licketyspit Storyplay in action (including a short film),  then lead some Storyplay games for you to participate in and finally explain the methodology of our approach. There will also be a Q&A and we and our local partners would love to hear your ideas and feedback about the best way to take this project forward together.

Have you heard the news?! A few months ago, we were overjoyed to receive funding which enabled us to buy tablets and SIM cards with mobile data for families in our network and beyond, who would struggle to buy these themselves. This meant that they could join in with our Big Porridge & Play Online sessions! We can now tell you that we’ve received further funding from Migration Exchange and have a limited number of additional Lickety Tablets for eligible families!

If you are a migrant, refugee or asylum seeker looking to join our online imaginative play sessions, please get in touch to see if we can help you. Or, if you know a family who might benefit from this, help us to spread the word! Please note that as we do have a limited number to give out, unfortunately we can’t guarantee availability – we will allocate the tablets to families who most meet our criteria. Why are we doing this?

Well, as some of you may know, at Licketyspit we were already using lots of different ways to stay in touch with families in our network, as we knew not everyone could get online easily. As the pandemic hit this year, we spoke directly to our families – and this need for internet access and suitable equipment became even more apparent.

Thanks to funding from the Scottish Government’s Wellbeing Fund, as well as additional support from BEMIS, we were thrilled to be able to buy and deliver 25 Lickety Tablets to families in our network experiencing digital inequality! It has been fantastic to see the children getting so much joy from our sessions, but also knowing that they will benefit from all sorts of other online learning and connection that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

The benefits of Big Porridge & Play Online!

Our Big Porridge & Play Online sessions are more than just a couple of hours of great fun! By taking part in all sorts of creative, joyful activities, the children are then inspired to play and imagine at home long after the sessions are finished – which has been particularly useful during the lockdown.

It’s also meant they have been able to play imaginative games with other children who they might not otherwise have met, getting the benefits of socialising, making new friends and learning to play imaginatively with others. And for the parents, they’ve provided a fantastic way to feel less isolated by seeing other parents, carers and families and feeling part of something, especially by joining our network and getting access to our welcoming Children and Families Facebook group.

P.S. Our local community sessions go one step further, as you’ll also meet families who live close-by, and connect in the community Facebook group! At the moment, we’re about to start sessions for families in Ruchill and Milton. Please get in touch if you’d like to know more!

During the sessions we do things like… 

🚶 Fun and energetic warm-up games to get us all moving
🎲  Sing songs and play games using our Lickety Playcards as inspiration
😎  Dressing up with things we find around our houses, so we can transform ourselves into crazy new characters
🔮  Using our imagination to take a trip together, using our imaginary balloons or magic ball, and tell everyone what we see – we’ve been to Mercury, Mars, underwater carnivals, Marshmallow Land, Robot Land and so many more magical places!
🖍  Encourage everyone to draw pictures for our Lickety Gallery – see opposite for just some of the fantastic drawings we receive!

If your children are going back to school this week, we want to remind you of something very important: you are BRILLIANT!  You’ve been learning, caring, creating, imagining, playing and supporting each other during lockdown! Everyone has missed school, so please try not to worry about getting behind or needing to catch up. Schools, and your children’s teachers, will be there to help the transition back to normal learning. 

If you’re feeling worried, nervous, or just in need of a little extra encouragement or guidance, the following resources may be of use to you:

We’ve missed schools being open too!

Did you know that, before lockdown, the Licketyspit team also went to school? Only for a visit, of course – but what a lot of fun (and learning) we brought when we did! Together with children, parents and teachers, in Storyplay, we make up stories, play games, sing songs, teach interactive rhymes, and generally use our imaginations to find new ways to PLAY and LEARN!

Since 2016, we’ve worked with eight schools and nurseries to bring our Storyplay drama-led play programme to children across Glasgow and Edinburgh – and we’re so looking forward to getting back into schools and playing with you again soon, face-to-face.

Take a look at some of our highlights from last year below! These were taken at Ibrox Primary Nursery (Govan), St Marys Primary School (Maryhill), St Martha’s Primary School (Springburn) and Miltonbank Primary School (Milton).

We are available for Storyplay Schools work starting after the October break and we’d love to hear from you if you think Storyplay could enhance learning at your school. Storyplay offers year-round engagement with schools, and through games, rhymes, song, imaginary play and performance we support children’s language development, confidence, emotional and social skills, as well as teacher creativity and parental engagement. 

In fact, after a recent Storyplay Residency at St Mary’s Primary, 90-100% of children evaluated by their teachers showed an improvement or a marked improvement in confidence, social skills, emotional literacy and resilience, and use and knowledge of language.

Licketyspit Press Release 28/04/2020

We may all be at home, but in our imaginations we can go anywhere, be anyone, do anything. All we need to play is each other!

Scotland’s pioneering intergenerational imaginary play specialists Licketyspit have received funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to adapt their popular family project Big Porridge & Play Glasgow to tackle social isolation and support families during the Coronavirus lockdown.

The charity will bring groups of families together via Zoom to play games, sing songs and go on imaginary adventures – all from their own living rooms! In trial sessions, families have made Flying Butterfly Cake, talked to Polar Bears, flown through a Tornado and climbed a Hot Chocolate Volcano with the Licketyspit Actor-Pedagogues!

Big Porridge & Play has been created with and for children and supports families to tap into their imaginations for hours of joy, excitement, creative learning and connection.

Families across Scotland will be able to join open sessions every Saturday morning at 10am from 30th May (Taster Session this Saturday 2nd May at 10am). There will be a dedicated Children & Families Network Facebook Group and lots of ideas for things to do at home in between sessions.

Families in Govan, Milton and Easterhouse, as well as the Gorbals, Whiteinch and Ruchill where the project has run since 2017, will be invited to community-specific, closed sessions on weekdays at 3.30pm (details below). They will also receive sets of Lickety Playcards, a fantastic repertoire of 16 colourfully illustrated cards to support ongoing play at home.

Licketyspit is one of a number of organisations working together to highlight the urgent need to address digital inequality during lockdown, through the No One Left Behind Digital Scotland Campaign and with colleagues on the Ethnic Minority National Resilience Network. They will work with BEMIS Scotland to ensure that digital access isn’t a barrier to participating in Big Porridge & Play.

We especially like these instructions to make a pirate treasure map! Maybe you could hide things round the house, tie a towel on your head to make a bandana and become a pirate ARRR!

You could take turns being the Pirate Captain leading the treasure hunt and getting your crew to SCRUB THE DECK and CLIMB THE RIGGING while you’re at it!

Children & Young People’s Commisioner Plan & VIDEOS

The CYPC for Scotland has released their 4 year plan to promote children’s human rights in communities across Scotland. Created with children and Commissioner Bruce Adamson, the priorities are: mental health, poverty, climate justice. Right now they are prioritising supporting children most affected by Covid-19.

They have also made a great animated video explaining what children’s rights are – here!

Internet Access during Covid-19 from Young Scot

Internet providers have agreed with the government to remove the limit on the amount of internet access or broadband people can use at home during this crisis.

If you use mobile data, companies have agreed to “fairly and appropriately” support you if you have any problems paying your mobile phone bill. They’ve also been encouraged to accomodate increased use of data. You should get in touch with your phone company if you’re having trouble paying your mobile phone bill, to see what they can do.
