CFN Trip to Rosemount Development Trust 30th Anniversary Celebrations 01st December 2019 It was great to join the Royston community for an afternoon of Christmassy fun for Rosemount Development Trust's 30th anniversary. Ruby, our Children and Families Network producer, went along with a couple of CFN families from Maryhill and the Gorbals and a few of their friends. It was great to meet lots of new families and join them in a family takeover of Royston Road with a lantern parade featuring fantastic Caterpillar Lanterns decorated by local groups and classes. The Glasgow Playbus was another highlight - a huge double decker bus full of soft play tunnels and obstacles! It was also good to get some hot homemade lentil soup (a bit like our Porridge & Play soup!) made by Julia and her colleagues at North Glasgow Community Food Initiative - thank you! CFN Trip to see A Lad in Maryhill Pantomime 4th December 2019 It was great to be joined by families from Maryhill, Ruchill and Govanhill for our CFN trip to the panto here at the CCH. We're grateful to Halo Arts and the West End Festival for the preview night tickets. It was especially good to play a round of Funky Chicken while we had our mince pies beforehand! 3rd December 2019 Congratulations to Licketyspit's Book Week Scotland Competition Winners! To celebrate Book Week Scotland 2019, we invited CFN members to send us a photo of a drawing/painting their child had done, inspired by their favourite book or story. 23rd November 2019 Mary Poppins Cinema Trip with the Caravan Project We had a FAB first ever Children & Families Network trip to the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) on Saturday to watch Mary Poppins! 22 families from St Marys Primary Storyplay and Wyndford Nursery Storyplay in Maryhill, and from Ruchill Big Porridge & Play and Whiteinch Big Porridge & Play joined us. 🎬BIG thanks to the Caravan Project and the Glasgow Film Theatre for making it happen! If your children go to a Glasgow Primary you can apply for  Glasgow Kidz Card which gives you one free child ticket + one free adult ticket for every child in your family for the Take Two screening at 11.30am every Saturday! Partner venues - like museums, galleries and parks - introduce participating families to their activities, and Licketyspit creates trails, games and play ideas to help families explore the venues after the family play session. Picnic & Play is made possible thanks to Awards for All funding from the National Lottery. Priority is given to members of the CFN when allocating places, and to families from our Storyplay Schools.

Storyplay is Back at St Mary’s Primary

26th August 2019 We are very excited to be coming back to St Mary's R.C. Primary in Maryhill next month for another Storyplay Schools residency! Our Lead Actor-Pedagogue Ruby will be in this week to meet with the Primary One teachers ahead of LicketyLeap starting on September 11th, with Virginia and Taz. Every child in Primary One will take part in LicketyLeap - our unique immersive theatre experience for ten children at a time. Parents and carers will also be invited to attend Session 2 of LicketyLeap on September 17th, 18th or 19th in the morning or afternoon. Over 3000 children and their families have taken part in LicketyLeap since 2008. This two session project has a high impact on children's confidence, use and knowledge of language, social skills and emotional resilience. Later this year we will also be bringing Playcard Play and Porridge & Play to St Mary's. Oakwood LicketyLeap

In Autumn Term 2018/19, 30 more children from Oakwood P1, P2 and P3 took part in LicketyLeap (The Story of Margaret & Margaret). In Session One, they travelled through the bog, over the sea, into the cave and up the mountain with Worried Margaret and Bold Margaret, to find their Heart's Desires! In Session Two, the children reenacted the whole story with the actor-pedagogues, using only a blanket. It's always incredible to see how much they remember and the increase in confidence to talk to us and share thoughts and ideas after Session One. Later in Session Two, parents and carers were invited to watch the video of the first session and some live reenactments of parts of the story by their children. It's so significant for the children to share this significant experience with the adults in their life and it's great to chat to parents and carers about the impact they think LicketyLeap has had on their child, and tell them more about why we do it.

I spent the early years of Licketyspit writing, directing and producing big, complex shows for children and families (and acting in them too!). Licketyspit is rooted in theatre, and we continue to produce full scale productions, like Molly Whuppie at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016. We want to fire children’s imaginations and we can see that theatre is a fantastic tool to do this. But more than this, an experience of theatre can give an early years child a great store of material, a multi-layered experience they can go on playing with, explore, share, re-invent and learn through. All children’s theatre reflects the artists behind it and their response to children. Licketyspit wants to inspire children in all aspects of our work – which is highly physical, visual and musical. We particularly we want to inspire children with language. Learning to communicate with words empowers children and connects them with society. You cannot really accumulate knowledge and learn until you have a vocabulary. Early years children learn many new words every day and understand far more than they can express. They relish navigating their way through language piecing together new understandings and relating them to the way they see and meet the world.
