Why are we so excited? Last week, something happened which made us very happy here at Licketyspit! In a big document outlining their plans for the next year the Scottish Government promised to deliver ā€œa revolution in childrenā€™s rightsā€ - how exciting does that sound?! They plan to do this by incorporating a major international law protecting the rights of children into Scottish law. Itā€™s called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is a bit of a mouthful, but thatā€™s because itā€™s the most complete statement of childrenā€™s rights ever to be written. This means that it covers all parts of a childā€™s life. No-one, or nothing, is left out: the needs of each child is as important as the next. So, as well as extremely important things such as a right to education, healthcare and protection from violence, neglect and exploitation, did you know that children also haveā€¦ ā­ The right to be LISTENED TO Article 12 - respect for the views of the child ā­ The right to EXPRESS THEIR THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS Article 13 - freedom of expression ā­ The right to PLAY WITH THEIR FRIENDS Article 15 - freedom of association ā­ The right to RELAX and PLAY! Welcome to the Big Porridge & Play Online blog, where we share the stories of all the adventures we've had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! See below for details of how to join. This week, we started two new sessions after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays, alongside our usual Saturday morning adventures. These smaller sessions are for invited families, whereas our big Saturday adventures are for anyone to join! See below for details of our next open sessions. Creepy crabs, orange potato houses and seriously cool grannies! A small session full of energy, ideas and warmth. Meet our new team members and hear about their training experience in Andre's blog! Friday 4th September 2020 Working for Licketyspit is never easy but fun, never simple but relaxed, and never formulaic but planned. Hello, my name is Andre and I am one of your new Actor Pedagogue (AP) Trainees for Licketyspit; a childrenā€™s early years theatre and play company based in Glasgow. In this blog I will be talking about my process and experiences so far with my new colleges, giving an insight into multiple elements of the job like training sessions, line learning, glitches, inductions, 2nd AP and DJ roles so that others can learn from my experiences. Starting in a new position in any job can be daunting and much like the Scared Koala, Crying Giraffe and Shy Fox, the lead up to the first few days filled me with anxiety. However, soon after starting the first training day, my feelings of dread and doubt eroded as I started to learn what I would be doing as one of two new APs. Going through and learning new exercises, songs, and games that we would do with our participants, I particularly loved taking part in the reflective drawing at the end of each session which was charming. Iona shares her thoughts after last week's Big Porridge and Play online session, which our busiest ever with an incredible 76 participants! Providing digital tablets to families who need them

Have you heard the news?! A few months ago, we were overjoyed to receive funding which enabled us to buyĀ tablets and SIM cards with mobile dataĀ for families in our network and beyond, who would struggle to buy these themselves. This meant that they could join in with our Big Porridge & Play Online sessions! We can now tell you that we've received further funding from Migration Exchange and have a limited number of additional Lickety Tablets for eligible families! If you are a migrant, refugee or asylum seeker looking to join our online imaginative play sessions, please get in touch to see if we can help you. Or, if you know a family who might benefit from this, help us to spread the word! Please note that as we do have a limited number to give out, unfortunately we can't guarantee availability - we will allocate the tablets to families who most meet our criteria. Ruchill & Milton Online Sessions

JOIN 17th August 2020 Big Porridge & Play Online community sessions are starting next month for families in Ruchill & Milton! These sessions are delivered via Zoom for families with 3-12 year olds. Participants will receive Lickety Drawing Pads and Crayons and new families will receive sets of Lickety PlaycardsĀ so you can keep playing the Porridge & Play games at home! BPPG has been running in Ruchill since 2017 and in Milton since May 2020. We may all be at home, but in our imaginations we can go anywhere, be anyone, do anything.Ā All we need to play is each other! Big Porridge & Play has been created with and for children and supports families to tap into their imaginations for hours of joy, excitement, creative learning and connection. We've loved seeing all the imaginative things you've been up to over the summer holidays. We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has sent us their drawings,Ā poems,Ā stories,Ā videosĀ andĀ photos so far. What amazing things you've created from your own imaginations! We've had families making their own cookery videos, so they can teach others delicious recipes from their culture. We've gone on exciting adventures to some far-away places thanks to our fantastic tour guide (see below!). We've listened to poems about lockdown and what it has meant for you. We've marvelled at your new recipes for refreshing drinks, sock puppets, paper unicorns, people made from fruit, butterflies made from buttons...
