Big Porridge & Play Week 2

A Selkie's Broth!

Welcome to the Porridge & Play Online blog, where we share the stories of all the adventures
we’ve had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! Get in touch to find out how to join.

Selkie Broth, Selkie Broth, Steam and Bubble and Froth! 🧜♀️

Shirley the Selkie needed a rhyming recipe for her Selkie Broth and all of the wonderful Sea Creatures came to the rescue! Aroush the Silly Whale 🐋 swam around, Junior the Funky Shark 🦈  plucked some lollies from the ground, Keith the Silly Puffer fish made it bubble, and Emma the Silly Seahorse helped us stay out of trouble!

A rather aquatic Thursday gang!

Funky Octopus, Snappy Shark, Smart Shark & Funky Dolphin

Silly Queen , Sick Penguin & Dancing Dolphin

Pinchy Crab, Wobbly Fish & a wee Lost Sardine,

Silly Octopus, Laughing Mermaid & Silly Mermaid

All ready to swim and dance and having a big underwater laugh

when suddenly…

‘I’m Shirley The Selkie – Half Human Have Seal

Is anyone there who will cook with me?’

Selkies are famous for their massive feasts and their Selkie Broth that’s a magic treat!

‘But to make it right you must rhyme all the time!’

Shirley The Selkie thought she couldn’t rhyme but with some of our help she was just sublime!

Selkie Broth! Selkie Broth! Steam and bubble and froth!

Selkie Broth! Selkie Broth! Steam and bubble and froth!

You can start with a snail that helps you grow a tail

and then just throw in a cat on a sleeping mat.

Stick in a red bed

and pink strawberries with blueberries,

tasty sugar toffee that sweetens lovely coffee.

Add some sleepy sloppy slime for our next rhyme!

A chair that makes the perfect lair

and cheese wrapped in leaves

just to finish with a flair!

From the Thursday Gang, Iona, Taz & Andre 🎈

‘Thats the queen that’s the octopus and that’s me swimming and that’s the whale that got some water and the hole splashed it! And some birds are there and I made the sauce that makes you into a boss and two fishes here and two turtles here and some bubbles coming out here… I was an Octopus Princess!’

Sara, Wednesday Group

‘A selkie is a mythical Scottish creature!’

Magnus, Wednesday Group

‘This is me getting eaten by the Lampray Eel, but I managed to escape! A lamprey eel is about a meter and 50 centimetres long! And also they look kind of Si-Fi. They’re actually kind of like peachy colour, like my hand and my whole body. Lampray Eel’s look Si-Fi-ish but they are actually real!’

Imre, Wednesday Group

Adeelah, Saturday Group

‘Do you know the noisy jellyfish?’

Azaan, Eshal, Ayra, Saturday Group

‘Do you know the pinch crab?’

Abdullah, Thursday Group

Our Selkie Broth Rap!

Grate in some CHEESE that makes you SNEEZE, achoo!!! 👃

Throw in a FLOWER that gives you POWER 🌹

A LETTUCE SO SMELLY it will make you SILLY 🥬

Some TOMATO SAUCE to make you a BOSS 🍅

A burger with CHEESE…… PLEASE? 🧀

Oranges a BUNCH, for your LUNCH 🍊

And Lollies that make you slooOooOooooW! 🍭

It bubbled and frothed and boiled, and was very stinky… but did the trick !! Shirley the Selkie was so pleased with the broth, that she says she’s coming back in a couple of weeks to make another broth with us!!

We learnt all kinds of wonderful facts about sea creatures this week! Imre taught us all about the Lamprey Eel,

‘A lamprey eel is about a meter and 50 centimetres long! And also they look kind of Si-Fi. They’re actually kind of like peachy colour, like my hand and my whole body. Lampray Eel’s look Si-Fi-ish but they are actually real!’ – Imre

And Magnus explained to us that A selkie is a mythical Scottish creature! He had learnt all about them in his book about Robert the Bruce! How fantastic!

Maybe you would like to find out about a Sea Creature! How does it move? What does it look like? Is it soft, or is it spikey? What a brilliant underwater adventure we had!! 🌊 🐠
