Monday 27th March Thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund, Licketyspit’s Porridge & Play sessions will be back in 6 Glasgow communities and online for 2023/24. Now in its 7th year, Big Porridge & Play Glasgow will take place in Govan, Maryhill, Whiteinch and online, as well as in Bridgeton, Castlemilk & Cranhill. Children and parents highlight the positive impact the sessions have on their confidence, mental health and wellbeing, relationships and sense of belonging, as well as children’s learning and development. “When I come here I feel like you can be you and feel free and you can laugh.” 6 year old, Porridge & Play Castlemilk Scroll down to watch the new film! “First week we came they were very shy but now very good. We all really enjoy this. I have met new friends, our language is better because of this” “Like nothing else we do. Great early drama/improvisation. Lots of imagination. Inclusive and child led!” “You won’t be alone here. I’ll be your friend” “Don’t know where we’d be without this. No-ones judging, there’s lots of acceptance, feel like we’re being brought into the community.” We [...]

The Wee Penguin who Loved Snowball Fights

2023-03-06T10:08:28+00:00

Porridge & Play Govan is a Licketyspit Storyplay project for families with 3-8 year olds in the area. Find all of Porridge & Play Govan's adventures here! Blog post written by Sarah! Govan was just delightful and packed full of magical adventures! Wednesday 1st March We danced our socks off in the groovy Dance Warm-Up with some mighty fine moves from Bimbo, Toby, Shadda, Sami and Mohammed to get us all warmed up. Then we met some of the Funky Chicken’s new pals. It was just marvellous to meet the two Biggies - Tiger and Hedgehog - and then the Sharp-Nailed Sloth and a very Happy Axolotl. What a treat! We were searching for the Magic Ball and Shadda and Azeem managed to find  different pieces of it which we stuck together. After Ameen and Amir remembered the song, we sang it all together. Off we went to a far off land that was very white and snowy... Where we found a Penguin! Mohammed saw it, in amongst all the mist and the icicles, and fortunately he was able to speak the special Penguin language of this land! He let us all know that this poor wee shy penguin was lost! It looked very worried, so we were so glad when Bayan said she knew the way to her home! We all bravely followed Bayan, trudging [...]

An Exciting Celebration at the Pearce!!!!

2022-11-23T10:35:27+00:00

Tuesday 15th November What an exciting Celebration we had in Govan to mark the final week of Porridge and Play at the Pearce Institute! The Magic Ball took us up into the sky and then we landed at the North Pole!! We met a sad looking penguin and Shadda thought the penguin needed his Mum so we all became penguins to make him feel better and decided to help him find his home. Penguin Shams led the way with a lovely penguin waddle and we  all walked like penguins. We found the Penguin’s house and discovered an underwater cave. We put on our underwater shoes and goggles and swam and surfed in the water. Whoosh! Penguin Mohammed found a magic egg and then finally Penguin Mujahid found the Penguin’s friends and we all celebrated again. As a special Celebration treat this week everyone brought along some special food to share. Asha brought a tasty tuna and tomato pasta and Wafa brought macaroni cheese. Ahlam brought some lovely salty cake with olives and feta and Maha brought delicious Gima. We had a flan from Sultana for desert! There was so much yummy food! The perfect way to celebrate a fantastic six weeks of Storyplay together. See you at the ceilidh! Hilde, Virginia, Camille, Ruby and Johnny [...]

Pirates of Govan!!!

2022-11-14T12:52:16+00:00

Tuesday 8th November Pirates of Govan!!! We had some new faces in Govan this week as we said hello to Virginia, Paul and Johnny who came along to join Hilde and the usual Govan Gang. We all showed Paul and Virginia how to be as Big As A Bear and then had a lovely dance. Mira saw a fish swimming in the sea and Azeem saw a fish too! Everyone dressed up as pirates and we ran around the Pirate Ship. Pirate Mohammed and Pirate Mujahid swabbed the decks and Pirate Shams and Pirate Ohi hoist the sail. Then there was a knock on the door and to everyone’s surprise a sad Pirate Paul appeared. He was speaking a beautiful language that Hilde said was Punjabi. Punjabi Pirate Paul was sad because it was his birthday and no-one had made a cake for him! It was Pirate Agi’s birthday too so everyone baked fantastic cakes for Pirate Paul and Pirate Agi then sang Happy Birthday to them. What a week in Govan! We can’t wait until the celebration next week. Hilde, Virginia, Paul and Johnny The Licketyspit Art Gallery! Some of your reflective drawings and what you said about them. Coming soon! Tree-House of Halloween!!!

2022-11-04T10:30:26+00:00

Tuesday 1st November   This week’s session was a lively one as always. We started with some moving about and made ourselves As Big as a Bear and as Fast as a …Hare!   We went high up into the air with our Flying Balloons. Down below we saw a river. Shadda saw her mum’s friend so we all waved to her. Our new friend Mastura saw lots of trees, and Mujahid saw the moon!   Next we all had great fun dressing up in wonderful and weird ways. Some of us turned into Grannies who helped us play Monster’s Footsteps.   There was Granny Ameen who lived in a treehouse and Granny Asha who lived in great big house. There was also Granny Mohammed who had a flying house with a garden full of bananas, oranges and strawberries. While Hilde and Granny Muhammed were busy making a fruit salad there were all kind of scary Hallowe’en creatures creeping about! But when Hilde and Granny  turned around again, they turned back into trees. They even managed to pick some apples. Thank goodness they all disappeared at the end.   After our carrot and coriander soup and delicious fruit, there was a game of Hello My Name is Joe and quick round of Funky Chicken.    Ameen was very helpful taking photos of our reflective drawings and everyone showed [...]

Hungry Wolfies!!!

2022-11-01T12:34:04+00:00

Tuesday 25th October 2022 This week at Govan we had great fun singing “Jelly on His Head” and making up new people in the song like Ameen’s skeleton Alan, and Sham’s character who had chocolate on his knees. Ohi knew a girl called Circ with chocolate on her hand, Mira’s character had ice cream on her knees and Toby knew a boy called Joe with jelly on his TOE!   Next we all dressed up as animals from the forest; there were snakes and foxes and even a zebra. Then we met Wolfie Amir ,Wolfie Abeera and Wolfie Qurrat who helped all the animals tell thetime But then tried to eat them for dinner!   The “Magic Ball” was back this week and it was yellow this time. We travelled to the desert and  followed a monkey to find some water. Ammar and Amran gave us some bananas to eat. Then we went for a swim followed by a dive under the water where we saw clown fish and red fish and even a grey whale.   Then we spotted something - it was a treasure chest filled with jewels! We needed to warm up round the fire after that, so we cooked some very tasty fish and had a wee nap. Ahhh…   Waking up, we had time to sing “Mary Mac” before having our meal.   [...]

Week 2 in Sunny Govan

2022-10-21T09:43:17+00:00

Tuesday 18th October 2022 It was lovely to be back at the Pearce Institute for week 2 of Porridge and Play where we welcomed some new people to our group, finished Bimbo's delicious soup and played Witches Fingers.... After which we went on an adventure with a Magic Ball! Ruby found a blue ball that needed blown up so it could take us all somewhere amazing. But where might it take us? Minal suggested we could go to the beach, Amrina suggested going to Paradise which would be beyond anything we’d ever imagined… When we had blown the ball up we all climbed inside and when we unzipped it to climb out, we found ourselves somewhere we had never been before. Inside Mr Bean’s house! We were all very small and Mr Bean’s teddy looked really big. Shams suggested we go to London so we crawled along a long tunnel, with Ameen passing everyone a torch so we could find our way. When we came out we saw the sights of London and Gosia spotted a jumbo jet sitting on the tarmac so we all went up the steps. Once aboard we met Stewie Stew the air flight attendant Stewie asked us for our tickets. Fortunately Gabi had some for everyone. But we had no pilot! So both Abeera and Ameen became our pilots. Qurrat suggested we fly [...]

Once we were all warmed up, Marie Louise introduced us to the Funky Chicken… He was soon joined by the Silly Tiger, Ameen’s Speedy Hare, Bimbo’s Funky Roaring Lion, Gosia’s Singing Coyote and Dami’s Funky Dog, and many more! Flying Balloons! It was soon time to go high into the sky in our Flying Balloons! Gabi saw a train going to the zoo… We saw multicoloured butterflies and Mohamad saw a silver and purple dragon crab, wow! Mohi saw his friend walking down his street and we all waved helloooo And Shams saw a train going to london bridge Grandma Grandma! Then Cami told us a story about her Grandma who could “wriggle like a fool!” This gave us an idea…we could dress up as grannies! So we did, using the old clothes, towels and other bits and bobs we always use to dress up at Licketyspit.  Then we met our new guests…Granny Shams came from Bukingham palace! Granny Gabi came from a castle… Granny Abeera came from Santa’s house where she liked to lounge [...]
