We went to Cranhill Primary on Friday 12th November for the first session of our Storyplay for the Planet!  We got to meet loads of wonderful children and their grown ups! As well as some of the fantastic teachers at the school that let us come and play with them! In this session we started out by being as BIG as a BEAR! Which meant we got to meet loads of animal friends that live on our planet. Then we got to know the Funky Chicken! All the children and grown ups got to show us their animal. Which included a sleepy elephant 🐘  and a snappy snake 🐍 We got to sing about Grandma and then blow up our balloons and travel all over the WORLD! What a great adventure it was! 'I loved that when I was thinking of things to see below all the ideas were so amazing and I realised we could make up anything at all!' Headteacher Flying Balloons We started off by exploring in our sock and you'll never guess what we found?! Why, we found a balloon! But, not just [...]

Storyplay for the Planet

2021-11-09T10:57:08+00:00

Licketyspit wants to spark a children’s rights-based play revolution! Storyplay for the Planet is part of our wider work in Glasgow, the first Storyplay City! See Big Porridge & Play and Storyplay City to find out what else we're doing nearby. What is Storyplay for the Planet? A series of Storyplay & Have Your Say Through Play sessions for families with 3-12 year olds in East Centre Ward. Licketyspit will deliver sessions in schools, nurseries and online for communities across the East Centre Ward to support confidence, parental engagement, relationships and children’s rights. The school groups will receive an introductory Storyplay session, followed by a Have your Say Through Play session to support the children to express their thoughts, feelings & ideas about Climate Change using imaginary play. These sessions will be a chance for families to explore the issue of climate change and share their feelings about it creatively, elevating children's voices and demonstrating the power of imagination to find solutions to the greatest collective challenge of our time! We might encounter melting polar ice, or deforestation in Brazil, put a stop to heavy traffic in Cranhill or plant trees in Barlanark. The adventure will present challenges and as a group we’ll overcome them using the power of our collective imagination! We might end up in a river clogged with rubbish, or slipping [...]

Storyplay Training

2021-06-08T09:24:02+00:00

More and more Children’s services are recognising the importance of play for learning and wellbeing, especially as we begin to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Play is how we learn and grow and build strong relationships. When we are in touch with our playful self we can be relaxed and at our most open - to other people, to new experiences and to new ideas. We can be anyone, do anything, go anywhere! We can adventure! We can be brave! Children are of course the world’s play experts. As adults, we need children and what they show us about humanity as much as children need us. We too need to play! Increasingly, research is showing the value of children playing with adults in bringing added dimensions to children’s play and developing their skills and understanding of ways they can play together – fairly, equally and richly. At Licketyspit, we agree with Vygotsky that there is no reason not to tell or show children things because this assumes a child’s learning is finite. Children are going somewhere we cannot even imagine. So, it’s fine for adults to support children’s play, creating a safe and equal space where they can join in and share their imaginings, skills and ideas. Children will simply take what they want from us. The crucial word here is equal. An equal play space where the adult [...]

Storyplay City Week 6

2021-03-15T15:29:58+00:00

Welcome to the Porridge & Play Online blog Storyplay City edition, where we share the stories of all the adventures we've had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! Get in touch to find out how to join. This week at our Big Porridge & Play Online session our play was inspired by some excellent news for the children of Scotland! Scotland is incorporating into law the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which will make sure that: ⭐ Children’s rights are as important as grown ups’ rights! ⭐ Children will have to be consulted and asked about their thoughts and opinions! ⭐ Children will be listened to and taken seriously! Great, isn’t it??!! To celebrate it, we thought we'd create a Children's Rights Cake recipe for the Scottish Government, and hopped into the Magic Ball to deliver it to Nicola Sturgeon herself! Thursday Thursday 4 March 2021 We started by becoming fantastic chefs through the power of dressing up and creating a fabulous recipe to bake a rights cake, including rights that are particularly important to our children, such as… ⭐ the right to LOVE that Felicia put in ✨ the right to PLAY suggested by Donald ⭐ the right to EDUCATION as Abdullah and Amir pointed out ✨ the right to be CARED FOR (and some strawberries from Arshiyan [...]

Storyplay City Week 5

2021-03-11T12:32:20+00:00

Welcome to the Porridge & Play Online blog Storyplay City edition, where we share the stories of all the adventures we've had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! Get in touch to find out how to join. How do we move when we’re stuck in mud? Or, if the ground is covered in ice? How do we move if our legs turn to jelly? Or if everything is slowed down? How do we move when we want to use our bodies to communicate something instead of using words? This week’s session was all about MOVEMENT. We all have different and wonderful bodies that can move in all sorts of ways, and in this week’s sessions we explored how we can use movement to communicate and express all sorts of ideas and feelings. Saturday 20 February 2021 Deep in ghosty park, in ghosty town, we must walk slowly on the sticky soft ground! If a ghost comes along…. Hide under a towel! We met a ghost, in the Magic Ball, but Abdal saved the day with his knowledge of ghosty langauge! ’PAINT’ means hello in ghosty town! And ‘CABBAGE’ is ghost language for we mean no harm, we just want to leave! So we shouted ‘PAINT' and ‘CABBAGE’ out loud, but it turned out the ghost [...]

These rhymes then turned into STORIES...read them below! Saturday 13th February 2021 Don’t fear...we’re here! The Magic Ball took us far, far away To a king’s castle where a princess lay 'I am trapped in here because I can’t rhyme And I want to get out And I have little time!’ "Don’t fear, we're here! You're already rhyming, can you not see?" We will give you more rhymes And we will set you free! A flower took a shower in the cold and frosty tower, And three stars had a little bar.
