They joined us on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for the most brilliant and exciting workshops where we learnt a Kpanlogo drumming rhythm, some Ghanaian dancing and the ‘Sugar & Butter’ song! Thomas and Adie had great big Djembe drums from Ghana, but they told us that to learn drumming all you need is a mixing bowl or cooking pot from your kitchen! Everyone made brilliant drums from bowls, Tupperware boxes, and even great big yoghurt pots! Thomas showed us how to hold our bowls between our knees and which parts of our hands to use to make different sounds. Then we learnt a Kpanlogo’ rhythm which went along with these words: ‘LET’S ALL PLAY THE DRUM, LET’S PLAY THE DRUM!’ We them learnt a whole dance routine [...]

What an exciting week! 🎵 ‘Everybody! Bring your calabash! We sang about the calabash, danced the Kpanlogo, a social dance from Greater Accra in Ghana, and found out all about Adie’s life! Learning about Adie’s life 🇬🇭 🎣 Adie is a dancer from Ghana, now living in Midlothian, near Edinburgh. He's been dancing professionally for 26 years and he told us how he started dancing when he was a wee boy growing up in a village. Adie grew up by the sea with his Dad, a fisherman, and his Mum, who worked selling in the markets. Before going to school Adie, like other children, would do chores in the house to help the family, fetch water for the pots, and then wash to get ready to go to school to learn. An early start in the morning for wee [...]

Licketyspit’s WINTER CEIDLIH

2025-12-16T18:30:19+00:00

Licketyspit’s Winter Ceilidh 2025 was a HOOT! We had a fabulous gathering with live music, delicious food, hilarious dressing up, high energy dancing and lots and lots of friends! Saturday afternoon in Glasgow was wet, windy, cold and rather dark but the Community Central Hall in Maryhill was full of warmth, music, laughter and imagination at Licketyspit’s Winter Ceilidh!  Families from our Licketyspit Hubs in Bridgeton, Castlemilk, Cranhill, Whiteinch, Govan, Maryhill and Online arrived ready to have a joyful time and celebrate the great year of imaginary play we have enjoyed together. Our Licketyspit APs and volunteers got the hall cheerfully decorated and put together some tasty food for all our guests - samosas, pakoras, fresh fruit, fresh bread, cheese, tomatoes & cucumbers, hummus, tzatziki and a nice selection of little cakes and hot chocolate with marshmallows for all. It was so brilliant to have The John Somerville Ceilidh band returning to our Winter Ceilidh to play beautiful tunes and help us all with our Ceilidh dancing - some of the children were helping some of the grownups with the dances too! A great thing about Ceilidh dancing is that you get to learn many different steps and also you get to dance with so many different friends - perfect really so you can have a wee dance with pretty much everyone!   [...]

Porridge & Play ONLINE goes SPOOKY!!

2025-11-05T16:20:22+00:00

Welcome to the Big Porridge & Play Online 2025 blog where we share our stories and adventures! Halloween is hands down one of our favourite times of the Year as we love to dress up and get all mysterious, mischievous and of course, spooky!! Saturday had the Halloween vibes still in the air and the Online Hub fully embraced it from warming up with a scary boogie to the Monster Munch to turning the Funky Chicken into THE SPOOKY FUNKY CHICKEN! Abisha introduced us to the Spooky Skeleton and Mohammed to the Spooky Snake. There was a Spooky Chocolate according to Aila and Khadeejah spotted the Spooky Pumpkin. Dressing Up was a highlight today – we all became Witches! The best part of dressing up is that once you have your dressing up clothes on, sorted and combined just as you want them, slowly but surely, a characterstarts to appear… And with the help of your brilliant imagination, you may in fact BECOME a cheeky witch for a little while… Meet our Saturday witches!! Witch Mohammad lives in a swimming pool underground and likes eating people with eyeballs. When he makes potions, he likes to add eyeballs, lettuce and carrots! Witch Kadeejah comes from under a tree and eats eyeballs! Her best potion is made with carrots, eyeballs, poison apples and, well… more poison. [...]

Ready to create all sorts of adventures, characters and situations! We sang a song with people that tend to go to bed With Fried egg on their Faces or Jelly on their Head! At Porridge & Play we love singing and songs that tell good stories, are often the songs we like! Like Jelly on His Head which is a cool rhyming song about all these wonderful and eccentric people who have funny routines before going for a good night sleep! AND of course, we love The Funky Chicken, a brilliant shapeshift game Each player becomes an animal and asks us to be the same! Sam imagined a Three Legged Turtle and Ibrahim was a Funky Lion. Shawn was the Baby who goes to school, but Khadar was a Dancing Lion. And Khadeejah became a Funky Cat while Abisha was a Silly Giraffe [...]
