Selkie Broth, Selkie Broth, Steam and Bubble and Froth! 🧜‍♀️ Shirley the Selkie needed a rhyming recipe for her Selkie Broth and all of the wonderful Sea Creatures came to the rescue! Aroush the Silly Whale 🐋 swam around, Junior the Funky Shark 🦈  plucked some lollies from the ground, Keith the Silly Puffer fish made it bubble, and Emma the Silly Seahorse helped us stay out of trouble!   Thursday 22 April 2021 A rather aquatic Thursday gang! Wednesday 21 April 2021 We are back back back we saw Lily, Brown and Osak and met Adesayo’s Jealous Cat! Wohoo! We met new friends, Mighty Magnus and his Crunchy Crocodile, Fareedah the Unicorn who flew up high and Firefunmi who introduced us to the Lazy Dog… woof! 🐶🦄🐊 Do you know the Cow Chicken? Have you ever been to Orkney and flown on the back of an Eagle? 🦅Have you even imagined how beautiful ancient cave paintings are? 🖌️ Well, this all happened in the Wednesday group of Porridge and Play, and what can we say, it’s so wonderful to PLAY! The Magic Ball this week was all about Art Voyages! What’s your favourite art form? Singing, dancing, rapping, painting? We dressed up as EXPLORERS  🥾and jumped inside the Magic Ball! Monday 26th April 2021 The 4th Lickety Mums session last Monday was all about digital safety and creating awareness about how to protect our online presence. Dr Soumi Dey of the University of Glasgow was the guest facilitator for this session. Soumi is an adult educator and teaches courses in Education and Social Sciences. She has a PhD in Children’s Literature and is specially interested in how children learn from digital resources. She is also a mum of a primary aged child and loves sharing her learning experiences with other parents. Soumi said: All of the topics we covered and my "internetiquette tips" can be found below. It was great to interact with all the super engaged mums – you always impress me with your keenness to learn with children and be better parents. Great to have Ruby and Shona’s support and input too. Tuesday 6th April 2021 The 2nd and 3rd Lickety Mums sessions covered a wide range of topics, including word processing, podcasts and knowing what's real and what's fake, on the internet. There was also plenty of time for discussion about things to do in Glasgow and the trials and tribulations of being moved house during the pandemic. Find links to all the websites and resources we looked at below. We also started the Licketypit Playlist, at Aya's suggestion, which you can listen to below too! Next time we'll be joined again by Dr Soumi Dey, for a session on online safety. Welcome to the Porridge & Play Online blog Storyplay City edition, where we share the stories of all the adventures we've had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! Get in touch to find out how to join. Turns! turns! turns!  What a line-up we had for our fabulous final sessions! After 9 weeks playing together, singing together, exploring together, rhyming together and laughing together we were all looking forward to celebrating together! A ceilidh is an excellent way to celebrate because it is a kind, lovely and relaxed way to share all things creative and to be our wonderful selves surrounded by friends… just like our Licketyspit Porridge & Play sessions on Zoom! And what better way to say thank you than to celebrate YOU! Get in touch to find out how to join. This week at our Big Porridge & Play Online session our play was inspired by some excellent news for the children of Scotland! Scotland is incorporating into law the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which will make sure that: ⭐ Children’s rights are as important as grown ups’ rights! ⭐ Children will have to be consulted and asked about their thoughts and opinions! ⭐ Children will be listened to and taken seriously! Great, isn’t it??!! To celebrate it, we thought we'd create a Children's Rights Cake recipe for the Scottish Government, and hopped into the Magic Ball to deliver it to Nicola Sturgeon herself! Play In A Time Of Crisis Webinar

At the start of February 2021, we were thrilled to be invited to present our work at the International Play Association’s Play in a Time of Crisis Award webinar series, which showcased projects all over the world that have supported children’s right to play during the pandemic. What we shared During the webinar, we spoke about the generosity, joy and limitless creativity we witnessed during Big Porridge & Play Online 2020. As our actor-pedagogues guided families through our Lickety Playcard games, amazing group story improvisation, dressing up and reflective drawing, we saw children break out of lockdown monotony and grow in confidence, becoming a tight-knit group, ready for anything. This was also reflected in the wonderful feedback from children and parents.   We regularly remind our Children & Families Network that “in our imaginations we can be anyone, go anywhere and do anything” - and this was the basis for the huge, and increasingly amazing, group improvisation activities, using Flying Balloons and the clear favourite, Magic Ball. As well as the sheer, thrilling enjoyment of playing together, we saw our participants gain vital life skills such as the pleasure of reciprocity in play, how to respect and listen to others, how to interact confidently with their peers and grown-ups, and the realisation that all we need to [...]

Lickety Mums!

Wednesday 10th March 2021 The first first block of Lickety Mums sessions started on International Women’s Day! 💃 It was a joy to come together with some of the Mums we see at our Porridge & Play sessions for a Mum-centred hour of discussion, skill sharing and good vibes! We started off stretching to I am Woman by Helen Reddy and danced our way out to Respect by Aretha Franklin! In the middle we did an introduction to the 5 Digital Rights and introduced couple of resources for developing digital literacy as a family. The Net Aware website for digital safety lets you search for Apps and learn about safety rating and how to make them even safer. Their tips for parents are also well worth a look. We also had a quick peek at Google's Internet Legends games and videos, which we'll come back to next time. Shona and Ruby were joined by Dr Soumi Dey, a Mum and specialist in children's emotional literacy, who'll be coming back to deliver a presentation at a future Lickety Mums Session. Get in touch to find out how to join. How do we move when we’re stuck in mud? Or, if the ground is covered in ice? How do we move if our legs turn to jelly? Or if everything is slowed down? How do we move when we want to use our bodies to communicate something instead of using words? This week’s session was all about MOVEMENT. We all have different and wonderful bodies that can move in all sorts of ways, and in this week’s sessions we explored how we can use movement to communicate and express all sorts of ideas and feelings.
