Storyplay Schools
Storyplay Schools is a unique project designed to support the development of children’s literacy, language and confidence through the introduction of shared stories and inclusive play across the whole school community – children, families teachers and PSA’s. Storyplay is delivered by specialist children’s theatre company, Licketyspit, together with the teachers. Storyplay is a programme to raise children’s attainment and support a connected, imaginative, inclusive school community that celebrates children’s rights and equality!
Storyplay is based on the Lickety Playcard repertoire of games, rhymes, songs, stories, dressing-up and imaginary play. In some schools, parents and carers are invited to come to the school to participate in family Porridge & Play sessions and LicketyLeap.
There is lots of evidence that our approach builds children’s confidence, strengthens friendships, develops language and literacy and encourages an enjoyment of school. Our approach is based on fairness, inclusion and the knowledge that everyone is creative.
In a recent Storyplay Residency, 90-100% of children evaluated by their teachers showed an improvement or a marked improvement in confidence, social skills, emotional literacy and resilience and use & knowledge of language.
We want everyone in the school community to be part of Storyplay, so we hope to see you at a session or assembly ! Do get in touch if you have any questions or ideas for your Storyplay School. You are also invited to join our Children & Families Network to participate in community opportunities outside school – Picnic & Play, CFN Trips and Big Porridge & Play Glasgow!
Where are the Storyplay Schools?
There have been 8 Storyplay Schools so far: Canal View, Ibrox, Oakwood, Riverside, St Marthas, St Mary’s, Wyndford
We’ve also done Storyplay for the Planet and Storyplay Tasters at many more schools and nurseries including: Arnwood Nursery, Cranhill Primary, Castleton Primary, Indigo Childcare, Oakgrove Primary, St Bartholomews Primary and as part of Spotlight Shotts schools workshops.
Storyplay helps unlock children’s – and adults’ – innate creativity and limitless imagination!

We would also like to invite you to join the Licketyspit Children and Families Network.
This is a big community of families across Scotland with children under-twelve, who all know Licketyspit. It’s a place to share experiences, ideas and resources.
You can join the network here or by sending us a text or email cfn@licketyspit.com / 07413 800 342 with your name, the names & ages of your children, and your postcode.
Please check back onto our site, where we’ll share news and photos of our sessions (with your permission). And tell us what you think! We love to get feedback and images of children’s drawings inspired by Storyplay – and we will always write back!
Working at a school?
Storyplay is an asset-based, children’s rights approach which uses inclusive drama-led play as a springboard into learning, emotional and social development. This is a high-impact, flexible programme of work, which supports teachers to use more creative relational approaches, supported by CPD and cross-curricular resources. Storyplay also supports children’s rights and pupil voice in every school.
