New Scots Integration Project opens new Porridge & Play Hubs

2024-02-13T17:24:49+00:00

In Bridgeton, Castlemilk & Cranhill In 2022, Licketyspit set up three new family play hubs as part of our 2022 New Scots Integration Project, designed to bring children & their families together through the power of Storyplay! With the help of our partners, our Storyplay Champions and the families we work with, we have created vibrant, friendly hubs that giveour children & families a loving and safe community. The Story so far... Storyplay Champion training In autumn 2021, we ran Storyplay Champion training sessions online, for local professionals and families who would help us launch our new hubs. Porridge & Play Block 1 - February-April Porridge & Play was all about getting together to share a meal and do Storyplay! We worked with our partners Cranhill Development Trust, Church House and the Indigo Childcare group to deliver this block. Castlemilk Porridge & Play - The Indigo Childcare Group- Launched in February, then Wednesdays (3:30-5:30pm) March-April Cranhill Porridge & Play - Cranhill Development Trust- Launched in February, then Thursdays (4-6pm) March-April Bridgeton Porridge & Play - Church House - Launched in February, then Fridays (4-6pm) March-April Picnic & Play - May-July In 2019 we did Picnic & Play with our Porridge & Play groups in the Gorbals, Ruchill and Whiteinch and these ‘trips’ were a real highlight for all of our participants. We brought this back for Porridge & Play [...]

Storyplay City Launch

2021-03-11T12:33:20+00:00

Licketyspit wants to spark a children’s rights-based play revolution! The Glasgow Community and National Lottery Community Funds have let us make a start. This is just the beginning! Everyone can join. There is a big imaginary play train going round Glasgow and everyone can jump on board! What is Storyplay City? Everyone, of all ages, loves to play! We need to play! Play is at the essence of being human. When we play imaginatively with other people there are no limits and no mistakes, just endless possibilities. Licketyspit and our children, families and colleagues have got a recipe and a list of ingredients that make imaginary play an easy, wonderful and inclusive part of every day. We call this Storyplay. Licketyspit has been developing Storyplay with Glasgow families for over 15 years. From LicketyLeap sessions in nurseries to Storyplay Schools programmes in primaries, to Porridge & Play in the community and Picnic & Play in museums and parks. Now, the Glasgow Community Fund is supporting us to build on our work to make Glasgow the first Storyplay City! We all need what children need Children know that the most important things in life are love, kindness, fairness, respect. Playing with children liberates adults to remember this! You can let your hair down and feel at home even with strangers! Storyplay is a celebration [...]

Celebrating our many languages in The Hello Game!

2021-07-02T09:43:04+00:00

Welcome to the Big Porridge & Play Online blog, where we share the stories of all the adventures we've had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! See below for details of how to join. Saturday 17 October 2020 It was great to get back to Big Porridge & Play this Saturday after a week’s break - and we have 8 more weeks of Saturday sessions to look forward to! Hooray! What a brilliant time we had! We played 👵 GRANDMA GRANDMA and 🐔 FUNKY CHICKEN, went on an epic 🔮 MAGIC BALL adventure - and also enjoyed a brand new game called the HELLO GAME!  Celebrating our multi-lingual network! Did you know that there are 158 different languages spoken in Glasgow?! Wow! We found this out last week, and so decided to invent the HELLO GAME to find out some of the languages that are spoken in the group - and it turned out there were SO many! Here are some of the ways we learnt to say HELLO to each other this week: 👋  In Kurdish - Salaam 👋🏿  In Yoruba - Bawo ni 👋🏾  In Shona - Mhoroi Mhoroi 👋🏿  In Hungarian - Szia 👋🏻  In Urdu - Assalamu alaikum But then, we found the Magic Ball! 🚀 After flying through the stars in a spaceship we [...]

Glasgow, one year on: a Storyplay explosion!

2020-10-09T11:58:50+00:00

It’s been a year since we moved the Licketyspit office to Glasgow - and what a year it’s been. None of us could have predicted the tumultuous events that would affect everything and everyone; for the past six months, like all other arts organisations, the activities and goals we set out have been forced to shift and morph to fit our new reality. So, we were delighted when one of the parents in our Children & Families Network happily remarked that she’d noticed “an explosion” in Licketyspit activity since we moved here. It looks like this is recognised elsewhere too, as we have just been granted funding from the Glasgow Communities Fund for our Storyplay City project! So, we thought it would be good to step back and reflect on that “explosion” ourselves. Our Storyplay Residencies and Big Porridge & Play intergenerational play sessions, focus on energetic, face-to-face imaginary play, often within large groups of families from different parts of the city, which with the arrival of the pandemic had to stop! But with difficulties come opportunities: we’ve learnt new ways of playing, new ways of conducting events remotely, new ways of connecting with children and families when we can’t be physically near each other, and new ways of finding new families to join our vibrant Families Network community.  A new home We had been [...]

Witchy brews, fruit fairies and ghost trains!

2021-07-02T09:43:49+00:00

Welcome to the Big Porridge & Play Online blog, where we share the stories of all the adventures we've had during our virtual play sessions on Zoom! See below for details of how to join. Wednesday! 23 September 2020 Thank you to the 12 families in Ruchill and Milton who joined us for our final Wednesday session of the month! We kicked things off with our favourite warm ups, where we got covered in chocolate ice cream, mud, cornflakes and ice lollies in MUCKY BREW then washed it all off with the WASHING SONG. 🧙‍♀️🥤☠️ Then something very exciting happened - we dressed up as witches for WITCHES FINGERS! Amanda, Glory, Esther, Muiz, Muizameel, Muqseen and Murshidat were all witches drinking witchy bottles of… orange juice, apple juice, coke, water, paint and paper! But then, we all drank a bottle of poison! Oh no! 🍵🥕🕷️ Witches Iona and Sanjay then let everyone try their yummy witchy soup. Iona was cooking hers with peas, carrots and spiders, but when she had a try, she found something very unexpected - the MAGIC BALL! 🐳 👑 🐉  So we blew it up, and off we went - under the sea, where we met lots of fish, a big pink shark and a lovely friendly whale; to a magic kingdom ruled by King Michris [...]
